The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention announced on Tuesday the start of implementing new standards for the content of sodium, sugar, and fat in certain food products. This measure is part of a nationwide campaign aimed at improving public nutrition and reducing the incidence of obesity and other non-communicable diseases.
This decree applies to packaged products manufactured within the UAE or imported into the country, including goods processed by companies in free zones. It mandates a phased reduction in the content of sodium, added sugars, and fat in products such as bread, sweetened dairy drinks, flavored yogurt and laban, salty snacks, and processed cheese. Full compliance with the established limits must be achieved by December 31, 2030.
Food enterprises that fail to adhere to the current limits may face administrative sanctions. These measures range from warnings to fines between 5,000 and 500,000 dirhams. Furthermore, authorities have the right to close a non-compliant enterprise for up to six months, with the possibility of extending such closure, or to revoke its license or permit in agreement with the relevant licensing body.
