The Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan has developed a draft according to which warning labeling will be introduced in the country for non-alcoholic beverages containing a high amount of sugar starting from January 1, 2027.
The labeling system will be determined by the amount of sugar per 100 milliliters of the product. If the sugar content is between 5 and 8 grams, the inscription 'Medium sugar content' will appear on the packaging. For a level between 8 and 11 grams, 'High sugar content' will be indicated.
For drinks where the sugar content exceeds 11 grams, it is proposed to use the warning: 'Very high sugar content — frequent consumption is harmful to health.' This warning must be placed on the front of the packaging, occupying at least 15% of its area and ensuring good visibility.
The placement of a QR code is also provided, which will provide the consumer with information about the composition, caloric value, and permissible daily intake. Furthermore, the Ministry of Health intends to form and regularly publish a register of drinks with high sugar content on a quarterly basis.
To implement the project, it is proposed to approve a unified methodology for laboratory analysis of beverages by March 1, 2027. The setup of the process for determining sugar content in certified laboratories is scheduled for September 1.
