Children aged between six and fifteen were taken to various Cape Town hospitals after allegedly experiencing severe vomiting, loss of consciousness, and difficulty breathing on Saturday evening. Four of these children, including the youngest, are children of Sakina Adam and her husband, and two others are friends of this family.
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness confirmed that the children received treatment in different hospitals and were subsequently returned to their parents.

According to Adam, the doctor explained the results to the family and indicated that seven substances tested positive. Adam stated: 'My children were tested, and they found seven types of drugs in them.' She named these substances as heroin, tik, cannabis, ecstasy, Xanax, and a substance she described as a coercive drug. Adam believes that the fact that the results concerned all six children, including a six-year-old, convinced her of the need for a full investigation.
She emphasized: 'If they had found only one drug, I would obviously doubt it because they are teenagers.' 'But finding seven types of drugs, even in a six-year-old, how is that possible?' Adam added that the family was traumatized and urged parents to be cautious when purchasing food and drinks, advising them to buy goods only from reputable stores.
A police representative, Constable Ndashe Gwala, confirmed that the Philippi police opened a case regarding the incident. He stated that 'the soft drink has been sent to the forensic laboratory for testing. The investigation is ongoing.' The soft drink manufacturing company stated that it learned of the alleged violations only after Weekend Argus's inquiry. The company noted: 'We learned about this allegation only through the Weekend Argus investigation. We did not receive a complaint from the family, hospital, or any authority and therefore could not check the batch, sample, or any medical reports referenced.'
The company stressed that consumer safety, especially that of children, is its top priority. It added that if an official complaint or inquiry is received from the family, hospital, or relevant authorities, the company will cooperate actively, including tracing the product batch and assisting with independent testing of any preserved samples. The company also reported that it keeps samples of all produced batches, and its bottles are equipped with seals that clearly indicate whether they have been opened or tampered with.
Weekend Argus previously visited the Spar store where the soft drink was allegedly purchased. The property owner, who leases the front part of her house to store operators, informed the tenants that she would not allow the business to resume. She expressed shock and distress after learning about the hospitalization of the children and raised questions about the large number of children regularly buying goods at the store. She stated: 'No amount of money is worth a child's life.'
The property owner also claimed that the tenants breached the lease agreement and that she acted on instructions she allegedly received from SAPS. Adam thanked the property owner for supporting the family and closing the store during the investigation. The store manager, who introduced himself as Jimmy, stated that the operators do not understand how the incident occurred and denies any intention to harm anyone. He said: 'We buy our supplies from the self-service store in Hyalite. We don't know how this happened. Why would we want to harm or kill anyone? How can we profit from this?'
