Regular use of the same pillow, as well as constant crumpling or folding, can lead to deterioration of its shape over time. Sometimes the pillow sinks in the middle, and sometimes the filling, whether cotton or fibers, accumulates in one area. As a result, the pillow stops being as soft and comfortable as before and does not provide proper support for the head. Because of this, many people decide to throw away the old pillow or buy a new one. However, if the pillow filling is fine, there are several simple home methods that allow you to restore its original volume.
Below are three effective methods that will help your flattened pillow look fluffy again.
If your pillow has sunk in the middle or the filling has shifted to one side, start with manual correction. Hold the pillow in both hands and gently press, then release. Continue this for some time. After that, turn the pillow over and tap it on the other side. This will help the fibers or cotton distribute evenly. It is important to avoid hard hitting or trying to straighten the pillow by force; light movements can improve its shape.
Since the pillow is used for sleeping, sweat and moisture often accumulate in it, leading to the clumping of the filling. This makes the pillow heavy, flat, and lifeless. In such cases, it is useful to leave the pillow outdoors. Place it in a clean place and turn it over after some time so that both sides have access to air. Light exposure to sunlight can also help reduce moisture. However, the pillow should not be left under intense sun for long hours, as this can damage the fabric and internal filling. Sun exposure must correspond to the type of pillow material.
If the pillow has become thick on one side and sunken significantly on the other, it is likely that all the filling has gathered in one place. In this case, simple tapping may not be enough. If the pillowcase has a zipper, open it and carefully distribute the cotton or fibers with your fingers. Distribute the filling evenly across the corners and empty areas of the pillow. Then close the zipper and lightly tap the pillow from all sides. This can significantly improve the appearance of the pillow. However, if you have a foam pillow, you should avoid bending or stretching it, as this can disrupt the foam's shape.
Even after applying these methods, if the pillow does not return to its original shape, its filling may already be damaged. This is especially true if the foam starts to degrade, the cotton forms lumps, or the pillow constantly sinks. In such situations, it is best to replace it. It should be remembered that a pillow is necessary not only for sleep but also for supporting the head and neck, so it is advisable to avoid using overly old or damaged pillows.
