State telecommunications company MTNL faces debt of 50,000 crore rupees; government plans to sell 40 assets to repay the debt

The state telecommunications company Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is facing a significant financial burden. MTNL's total debt, including government bond guarantees, is estimated at approximately 50,000 crore rupees.

The government intends to raise funds by selling about 9,000 crore rupees worth of land and other company assets in the next fiscal year, 2027-28. These funds will be directed towards reducing the company's debt burden.

According to a report by the news agency PTI, there were previously some disputes and legal obstacles related to asset ownership rights. These issues have been resolved, after which the government identified 40 such assets without disputed ownership rights for sale.

According to a government source, MTNL's assets exceed the amount needed to repay the company's total debt. MTNL's government-guaranteed bonds amount to about 30,000 crore rupees, bringing the total debt to approximately 50,000 crore rupees. It is planned that the revenue from the sale of these assets will help improve the company's financial position, although further information on the process and timeline for asset sales is still awaited.

MTNL's current financial status is characterized by the company primarily covering employee salaries through rent received from its assets. The company's losses significantly exceed its operating income. Nevertheless, in the quarter from April to June 2026, there was some reduction in losses, with MTNL's net consolidated loss decreasing to 842.36 crore rupees compared to 943.15 crore rupees in the same quarter last year.

Alongside the decrease in losses, an increase in operating income was noted. For the quarter from April to June 2026, MTNL's operating income grew by 25.9% year-on-year, reaching 216.89 crore rupees. Despite the revenue growth, the company failed to exit losses in this quarter.

In the stock market, MTNL shares have recently shown growth. On the BSE, the share price was 26.82 rupees, showing an increase of about 20% over the last week. However, over the year, the share value has fallen by approximately 35%. The company's market capitalization exceeds 1,600 crore rupees, and the nominal value of the share is 10 rupees. MTNL shares are included in the BSE 1000 index.

By the end of September 2026, the government's stake in MTNL was 56.25%. Attention will now focus on the plan to sell the company's assets. If the government manages to raise funds from the proposed asset sales in 2027-28, it could help reduce the company's debt burden. Despite the recent rise in MTNL shares, the company continues to face pressure from debt and losses. Before making investment decisions, it is important to study the company's financial condition, the progress of asset sales, and stock price dynamics. Investments in the stock market involve risks.
