Character Comparison in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayana and Nitesh Tiwari's Version

After watching the film 'Ramayana' recently, it became clear that the casting discussions that had been going on for weeks were reflected on screen. No matter where you are in the world, the influence of Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayana' from 1987 is so deep in the hearts of viewers that comparison is unavoidable. Although there are no serious technical issues with the film's casting, the true essence lies in the script and how the film attempts to present this story in the modern era. Below, we examine the main characters from both periods and the differences between them in detail.

Arun Govil and Ranbir Kapoor

In the famous 1987 series by Ramanand Sagar, Arun Govil portrayed Rama as a calm, meek, softly speaking, and deeply devoted hero. His restrained demeanor and serene facial features made him a constant spiritual symbol, and even today in India, anyone who plays Rama is compared to Arun Govil. Interestingly, in this new film, Arun Govil himself plays the role of King Dasharatha. His voice still evokes memories of the old Rama, although in the role of Dasharatha, he seems not to fully meet expectations.

Conversely, in Nitesh Tiwari's 'Ramayana' from 2026, Ranbir Kapoor is presented completely differently. Here, Rama is depicted as a more athletic, grounded, and physically active warrior prince. His performance masterfully balances spiritual stability with courage and the emotional vulnerability of a man undergoing exile. Nevertheless, Ranbir's perception in the role of Rama might seem strange because the images of his previous violent and commercial films are fresh in the minds of viewers, which makes accepting this new role instantly difficult.

Sai Pallavi and Deepika Chikhalia

In Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayana', Deepika Chikhalia played Sita, who radiated traditional restraint, quiet virtue, and deep self-respect. She did not just perform the role; she lived it, and the immense respect and love for Rama visible in her eyes deeply touched the hearts of Indian families. In contrast, the image of Sita embodied by Sai Pallavi in the 2026 film is vastly different from the previous one. Sita here is completely modern and bold. Like Rama, she is athletic and fully proficient in fencing. There is a scene in the film where Sita's mother goes onto the battlefield in full combat gear and defeats 14,000 demons alongside Rama and Lakshmana. Moreover, during Sita's abduction, not a trace of fear or tears appears in her eyes, which is a major departure from traditional Indian worldview.

Aravind Trivedi and Yash

In the 1987 series, Aravind Trivedi immortalized Ravana as a terrifying mythological villain possessing traditional dramatic grandeur, powerful speeches, booming laughter, and full energy. Ravana's arrogance and terror were clearly evident in every dialogue, and most importantly, in that era, the image of Ravana was not idealized or embellished in any way. In contrast, in the 2026 film, Yash presented Ravana as an extremely influential, politically astute, and complex king of Lanka. Nitesh Tiwari's 'Ramayana' spends much time exploring Ravana's intellect, power, and inner motivations, rather than simply portraying him as an odious villain. Yash looks magnificent in his performance, but the way this character is constructed sometimes gives the impression that the creators are trying to justify or glorify Ravana.

The Changed Image of Lakshmana

Sunil Lahri won the hearts of all viewers in the 1987 series with his passionate, emotional, and youthful devotion to his elder brother Rama. A unique characteristic of Lakshmana's image was the special mix of anger, loyalty, and assertiveness always visible in his eyes. Meanwhile, in the 2026 film, Ravi Dubey presented the relationship of this loyal younger brother with the intensity of contemporary cinema. He can be called the Lakshmana of the 'millennial' generation, whose speech is less restrained; he often winks, displays anger fearlessly, and is ready for action at any moment. His dialogues are quite light. If you have seen Saif Ali Khan's character in the film 'We Together', this Lakshmana reminds you of the same mischievous and modern style.

The Transformed Shurpanakha

The image of Renuka Dhariwal remained in the memory of generations. Ramanand Sagar, drawing on folk tale traditions, presented Shurpanakha as a demoness who was utterly bold, fearless, and frightening. Her eerie laughter and aggressive confrontation with Rama and Lakshmana became a memorable feature of old Indian television. Conversely, in Nitesh Tiwari's 'Ramayana', Rakul Preet Singh portrayed Shurpanakha in a very distinct style, in human form. Instead of showing her in a scary or demonic guise, Tiwari presented her in her royal aspect as a princess of Lanka. She was shown to be very attractive. However, the creators presented this with the idea that beauty...

Ramayana film surpassed 100 crore at Dhanteras, but trails Adipurush and Dhurandhar 2

The film Ramayana, directed by Nitish Tiwari, did not achieve the expected massive opening at the box office, yet it still showed good revenue. It set a new record in India among films released before Diwali. However, the true test for the film began on the second day of release.

On the second day, which coincided with the Dhanteras festival, there was a significant drop in earnings. After an impressive first day where all shows were fully booked, the film collected a net income of 64.85 crore rupees in India. Although this amount was somewhat lower considering the large budget and scale of the picture, it allowed the film to enter the top four highest-grossing debuts in Bollywood history.

According to the report from Sakencode, on the second day, which fell on Dhanteras, the collection amounted to only 48.05 crore rupees. Nevertheless, the film's total net collection reached 112.90 crore rupees, and the worldwide gross was 219.80 crore rupees. The Dhanteras and Diwali festivals influenced the revenues, and the creators hope for an increase in collections after Diwali.

The main contribution to the film's box office comes from the Hindi version in India. Despite Yash's participation as Ravana, the Kannada version faced a very slow start. The Kannada version earned only 7.50 crore rupees on the first day, and the pace remained low on the second day, bringing in only 5.15 crore rupees. Meanwhile, the performance of the Telugu version in other languages was good, but the Malayalam and Tamil versions did not bring significant profit to the film.

On the first day, the film Ramayana surpassed premieres such as Pathaan (57 crore rupees), Animal (63 crore rupees), and Drishyam 2 (62 crore rupees). However, the film could not set the record for the biggest debut in Bollywood, which belongs to Dhurandhar 2 starring Ranveer Singh, which collected 102 crore rupees on the first day. Furthermore, Ramayana failed to surpass the opening of the film Adipurush Prabhas.

Adipurush collected 86.75 crore rupees on the first day, and this trend repeated on the second day. By the end of the second day, Adipurush had accumulated 151 crore rupees in net collection in India, whereas Dhurandhar 2, including previews, had already collected over 220 crore rupees in net collection. Consequently, achieving these figures for Ramayana appears unlikely.

Rishab Rikhiram's new track 'Rama Rama' about Shabari and Rama receives positive reviews

Sitar virtuoso Rishab Rikhiram Sharma continues to win listeners' hearts with his compositions. He recently released the song 'Rama-Rama', dedicated to Shabari, which is filled with an atmosphere of devotion. This track was performed by him during the presentation of the film 'Ramayana' trailer in Delhi, after which it was released at the request of fans.

The song 'Rama-Rama' is presented in the format of a music video. Although it is not yet known whether it will be used in the film, the initial impressions from listening were very strong. The melody of the sitar itself is charming, and Rishab's mastery of the instrument has undoubtedly added sophistication to the song. He portrays Shabari's devotion in his unique style, and the composition feels more like a bhajan than just a song. The visuals are also of a high standard, and Rishab's vocals are of high quality.

In the song, Rishab touches upon the theme of Shabari's unwavering devotion and her story of offering fruits to Lord Rama, and also includes tales of Govardhan. According to the text, Govardhan wished to serve Lord Rama and wanted to become part of Ram Setu. However, by the time he reached the seashore, the bridge had already been built. In response to this, Lord Rama promised that in his next incarnation, he would return as Lord Krishna and personally help him.

This promise of Lord Rama was fulfilled in Braj. Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill on his little finger for seven days and seven nights. During this period, he protected the residents of Braj and their cattle from the heavy rain caused by the god Indra. Near Govardhan is the sacred lake Kusum in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that this place is associated with Radha and Krishna, and it still reminds of their divine love in the land of Braj.

From the story of Shabari's deep love to the desire to serve Govardhan—all these narratives teach that for God, no offering is too small. If there is sincere faith and devotion in the heart, even a humble gift will be invaluable to Him.
