ODOP: A New Economic Concept Linked to the Diwali Festival

The Diwali festival, which traditionally symbolizes joy, divine light, and deep religious devotion, has today also become a historical opportunity to steer the economic activities of Uttar Pradesh in a new, strong, and unique direction. The government of Uttar Pradesh, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has revived the domestic economy by focusing on Diwali through a program like 'One District One Product' (ODOP).

During this festive period, this program has become the backbone of the state's rural and local economy. Products created under ODOP bring prosperity, hope, and genuine independence to local artisans, weavers, and micro-entrepreneurs across all 75 districts of the state. This significant effort is aimed at preserving traditional arts and fully implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concepts of 'Buy Local' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) on the ground in Uttar Pradesh.

A decade ago, the market landscape during Diwali was completely dominated by imported goods and foreign glamour, while local crafts and pottery were marginalized. However, today, as the entire state is immersed in the excitement of purchasing decorations, worship items, and gifts, the ODOP program beats at the heart of local markets. Locally made handicrafts have replaced foreign garlands and decorative items.

The Yogi government has not only ensured the preservation of the centuries-old unique cultural and trade identity of each district but has also transformed it into a global brand. The most pleasant and economically significant aspect of this process is that large financial transactions occurring during festivals now go directly into the hands of small artisans, weavers, and traders living in the villages and towns of Uttar Pradesh, instead of going into the coffers of multinational corporations or large foreign conglomerates.

When a local artisan receives fair payment for their labor, they spend this income on food, clothing, education, and other necessary services in the local market. This strengthens the economic foundation of the entire district and state.

Affirming this humanitarian goal, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the residents of the state on Dhanvantari Jayanti and urged them to completely forgo Chinese or imported goods when choosing gifts during this festive season, using exclusively ODOP products and domestic goods. The minister's clear message is that we should celebrate a 'local Diwali,' respecting the labor of hardworking artisans and master families who support our ancient cultural heritage day and night.

He specifically highlighted the world-renowned carpets from Bhadohi, the exquisite Munja art from Prayagraj, the artistic wirework from Mainpuri, and the charming wooden toys from Chitrakona, which the Yogi government has restored as a hallmark of the state.

Thanks to the continuous and intensive efforts of the government, Uttar Pradesh, which once suffered from economic backwardness, is now setting new export records. In line with Dhanteras traditions, copperware from Muradabad is in highest demand: carved lamps, worship trays, and magnificent statues of Lakshmi and Ganesha fill the markets. Lanterns, chandeliers, and decorative candle holders made of glass from Firozabad bring brightness to every home. Bandhani sarees and Zardozi outfits from Varanasi have become the number one choice for premium gifts. Furthermore, pottery from Khurji in Bulandshahr, the revered and eco-friendly terracotta craft from Gorakhpur (including clay lamps, elephants, and statues), exquisite Chikankari from Lucknow, natural fragrances and incense from Kannauj, and handmade wooden items from Chitrakona dominate the Diwali market.

This government program has also proven to be a quiet economic revolution in terms of employment and self-sufficiency. Today, over 50 million artisans, weavers, sculptors, potters, and small traders are connected to ODOP and the traditional 'clay product plan' in Uttar Pradesh, directly and indirectly. The creation of the Clay Product Council and the distribution of modern toolkits and electric potter's wheels among more than two hundred thousand artisans demonstrates the government's unwavering commitment to the principle of 'Antyodaya'. This has not only significantly increased their production capacity but has also raised the quality of their products to an international standard. During this special 15-20 day season, these millions of families earn a very large portion of their annual income. This is the result of the government's far-sighted policy, through which the economic condition of people at the bottom rung of society, from the metallurgists of Muradabad to the Prajapati community in Gorakhpur, has improved unprecedentedly, and an indelible lamp of dignity and prosperity has been lit in their homes.

This state policy, which involves rejecting imported goods in favor of domestic ODOP products during Diwali, brings multifaceted and multi-level benefits. The biggest of these is economic empowerment and inclusive development, where funds...

Yogi Government to Launch 'One Lamp for Gomatari' Campaign to Celebrate Diwali in Goshalas

The government of Uttar Pradesh state is initiating the 'One Lamp for Gomatari' campaign during Diwali to garner public support for animal protection. As part of this initiative, over 7500 cattle conservation centers and shelters for stray cattle across the state are planned to be illuminated during the Diwali period.

Furthermore, the promotion of cattle-based products will be encouraged. The goal of this step is to raise public awareness about the necessity of cattle conservation, as well as create new income opportunities for rural women and farmers.

During the campaign, youth will also be called upon to take an oath for cattle conservation.

The Minister of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Dharmapal Singh, emphasized that special attention is being paid to promoting cattle-based products and strengthening the rural economy. Stalls featuring products made by women from self-help groups, as well as items made from these products, will be organized within this framework. The sale of these goods will provide rural women with an opportunity to earn additional income.

It is also planned to encourage the purchase of cattle-based products as Diwali gifts to stimulate their use and demand.

Special events will be held in goshalas and stray cattle shelters in honor of Diwali. Special emphasis will be placed on ensuring the participation of local residents so that the message of cattle conservation reaches people alongside the joy of the festival. This initiative aims to transform goshalas from simple shelters into centers of community participation and awareness.

The Chairman of the Cattle Care Council, Shyam Bihari Gupta, noted that the sale of cattle-based products can help increase the income of rural women. Encouraging products created through self-help groups will give women a chance to become economically strong through their skills and labor. It is expected that the increased demand for these products during a major festival like Diwali will contribute to increased production and sales in rural areas.

As part of this campaign, rural women and youth will be informed about the importance of cattle conservation. In addition to increasing public participation in protecting stray cattle, people will also be provided with information on the use and benefits of cattle-based products. The main objective is to link cattle conservation with social responsibility and attract broad participation in this process.

According to the Chairman of the Cattle Care Council, Shyam Bihari Gupta, this initiative to illuminate goshalas and promote cattle-based products during Diwali is an attempt to connect religious and cultural traditions with the self-sufficiency of rural areas. This is aimed at both increasing sensitivity towards stray cattle and developing economic opportunities for women from self-help groups and farmers.
