More than three thousand tarantulas were seized at Lima Airport, Peru. According to The Guardian, the final destination of these spiders was Germany.
According to information from the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), relayed by Agence France-Presse on Thursday, the spiders were hidden inside dirty socks located in three suitcases carried by two Germans and one Polish citizen.
The discovery was made after airport staff noticed unusual movement inside the luggage during a routine customs inspection at José Chávez International Airport.
According to authorities, the arthropods can be sold in Europe for a base price of 500 euros, which could potentially have brought the three suspects over 1.5 million euros for the quantity of spiders they possessed.
It was established that the tarantulas originate from various regions of Peru and were found at different stages of development—from eggs and newborns to adult specimens.
