Uzbek Genome Research Conducted to Identify Unique Genetic Features and Hereditary Diseases
The Uzbek population is genetically distinct from both Europeans and Chinese, necessitating separate studies of the genetic characteristics of Uzbekistan's residents. This was reported by Alisher Abdullaev, director of the Molecular Genetics Laboratory at the Center for Advanced Technologies.
According to the scientist, research in international genetic databases is predominantly based on the European genome. Abdullaev emphasized that the populations of Uzbekistan differ from Chinese and European populations, as well as from other demographic groups.
In this context, the center is implementing the '1000 Genomes of Uzbekistan' project. This project aims to identify genetic variants characteristic of the Uzbek population and, based on them, create an inexpensive DNA chip that will help determine the risk of hereditary diseases.
During a press tour at the center, it was announced that 30 thousand infants were examined for 48 types of hereditary diseases within the framework of the project; in each child, a severe illness was identified.
Abdullaev also pointed out that consanguineous marriages can increase the risk of hereditary diseases. He noted that such marriages are a problem in the republic, and the proportion of such unions is very high in some regions.
The scientist explained that if both parents carry a genetic variant causing the same recessive hereditary disease, the probability of having a child with this disease is 25% with each pregnancy, even if the parents themselves show no signs of the disease.
Furthermore, the center operates the first stem cell bank in Uzbekistan. It stores over 1200 biological samples at minus 196 degrees Celsius.
