Ministry of Agriculture explains rise in onion prices in Uzbekistan

The increase in the cost of onions in Uzbekistan is due to several factors, including seasonality, transportation costs, and markups set by intermediaries. This information was provided by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Representatives of the department specified that in several regions, the local harvest has already been collected, which necessitates importing onions from other regions. These additional delivery costs are directly reflected in the final price of the product.

According to the ministry's data, approximately 1.5 million tons of onions are planned to be harvested in the country in 2026, which exceeds domestic demand by 35%. Furthermore, the department warned entrepreneurs against artificially inflating prices.

It should be noted that in April 2025, there was also a sharp jump in onion prices in Uzbekistan, with the cause of this increase being cited as a reduction in the area of cultivation allocated for early varieties of this vegetable.
