Anthropic's plan to conduct an initial public offering with an estimated valuation of US$ 1.5 trillion, which is equivalent to approximately R$ 8.19 trillion, is facing resistance from major investors.
Recent volatility in the artificial intelligence (AI) stock market has generated uncertainties regarding the final value the company might achieve on the stock exchange and even about the execution of the operation within the planned schedule.
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, three prominent investors intending to participate in the offering suggested that the valuation will require a downward adjustment. One of these investors estimates that the company's market value should approach US$ 1 trillion, which corresponds to about R$ 5.46 trillion.
Anthropic aimed to conduct the IPO the week before the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, aiming to raise up to US$ 100 billion (approximately R$ 546 billion), which could set a new record for the largest IPO in history.
The investors interviewed by the newspaper also expressed apprehension about the willingness of institutional funds to resume significant investments in the AI sector after recent losses. One of them raised the issue of the possibility of the company postponing the offering.
As an alternative, there is the option of raising a smaller amount than originally projected. It is mentioned that on September 30th, Anthropic had US$ 146.6 billion (about R$ 800 billion) in cash.
The success or failure of this IPO could reverberate through the broader financial market, given that Anthropic maintains commercial and financial ties with global technology giants such as Google, Amazon, and Nvidia.
The initial expectation was that the company would surpass the feat of SpaceX's IPO, which occurred in June, and become the largest initial public offering ever recorded. Executives from Anthropic and its consultants are scheduled to meet in the coming days to discuss the plans.
To date, the company has chosen not to commit definitively to the details of the operation, maintaining flexibility to adapt its strategy according to current market conditions. The proposed valuation of US$ 1.5 trillion began to be questioned precisely by investors who showed great interest in participating in the offering, due to the current instability in tech stocks.
