Italian Chef Fired in Australia for Refusing to Put Pineapple on Pizza

An Italian chef was fired from a well-known Australian restaurant after refusing to add a specific ingredient to his pizzas. The specialist himself, Davide Tamburella, claimed that using this fruit was an insult to his culture.

The decision was made by the Fair Work Commission on Tuesday and reported by the Guardian newspaper. It was established that Davide Tamburella was dismissed from the restaurant 'La Costa' in Queensland on May 20, two weeks after his boss, Elliot Ingram, called him in to discuss work-related issues.

Among these issues was the Italian chef's refusal to put pineapple on pizzas, as he considered it an 'insult to his culture,' according to The Guardian. It turned out that the restaurant was hired by an entrepreneur who wanted to hold an event and insisted on serving pizza with ham and pineapple. It is worth noting that this fruit is very popular in the region.

This was the third attempt by the chef to reject the request, demanding that his employer understand that for Italians, this was a matter of 'extreme importance.' In response, the restaurant owner stated that after 17 years in the hospitality business, he had learned that sometimes one has to make decisions contrary to personal preferences. He admitted: 'Can I order a pizza with ham and pineapple? Probably not my favorite,' but stressed that he could not ignore the customer's request.

For the chef, this decision had even more serious consequences, as he was planning to obtain a permanent residency visa in the country after three decades living in Australia. Without a job, this application would have to be returned to the initial stage. The British newspaper notes that meanwhile, the restaurant has closed, and its owner attributed this to high rent.

Nevertheless, the chef found a job at another restaurant.

Eight renowned South African chefs to present their dishes at Taste of Cape Town 2026 festival

The Taste of Cape Town festival has announced the first eight chefs on its lineup, a gathering previously unseen in South Africa; more names are expected to be revealed.

On November 28 and 29, seven of the country's most decorated cuisines will cook side-by-side at the Green Point Cricket Club grounds. These include James Gag from La Colombe, Peter Templehoff and Ashley Moss from FYN, Bertus Basson from Basson & Co., Amori Burger from Upper Union, Wusi Ndlovu from EDGE, Shaun Scorbey from Vuur, and Arlind Harizaj from Amura.

These restaurants hold the nation's top awards, have placed South Africa on lists of the world's best restaurants, and manage some of Cape Town's most exclusive tables. For one weekend, they will all be cooking in temporary Taste kitchens, allowing any visitor to approach and place an order.

Bonke Shipalana, CEO of The Allure Group, the festival's licensor, noted: 'Any one of these chefs could head the festival alone. We have eight of them cooking simultaneously, fifty meters apart, and we are not finished yet.'

He added that visiting all these restaurants usually requires months of booking and a very patient schedule, but at Taste of Cape Town, it can be done in just one day.

Each restaurant will offer two signature dishes and one exclusive dish created specifically for the festival and unavailable elsewhere. Additionally, Airchefs will host a live chef exhibition throughout both days, featuring demonstrations held in six daily sessions.

For guests wishing to experience the more refined side of the festival, The Taste VIP Residence is available. It offers 300 spots per day in a private guest tent on the festival grounds. Tables for two, four, or six are available, with each table being decorated and bearing the guest's name.

The day begins at the gates. Residence guests pass through the main entrance and proceed directly through the Priority VIP queue, entering with a glass of Cap Classique and a guaranteed waiting spot.

Afterward, the festival moves to the table. Each seat comes equipped with four vouchers to use with the chefs: two for signature dishes and two for exclusive ones. This allows guests to dine at La Colombe, FYN, Basson & Co., and EDGE in one sitting without incurring extra costs.

A light welcome reception is served from 11 am, the Harvest Table opens for guests to snack throughout the day, and cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages are provided free of charge from 11 am to 5 pm. A private DJ plays throughout the day in the Residence, setting the pace for the long Cape lunch that can last until the last sip. As the sun sets, an early evening set is served, and the cash bar accompanies the evening until 10 pm. Private restrooms are provided for Residence guests.

Table prices start from 9,800 South African Rand for a total table for two, 18,800 South African Rand for a table for four, and 28,200 South African Rand for a table for six, per day, excluding VAT. The number of spots is limited to 300 per day.

More information will be announced next week. Taste of Cape Town will announce the next chefs joining the roster next week, as well as the full entertainment program for the festival stage.

Taste of Cape Town will take place from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm on Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29, 2026, at the Green Point Cricket Club. General tickets start from 450 South African Rand. Festival and The Taste VIP Residence tickets are available at tasteofcapetown.com and Quicket.

Pizzeria in João Pessoa asks left-wing customers not to frequent the establishment

A pizzeria located in the Jardim Oceania neighborhood of João Pessoa made a public request for individuals with left-wing political leanings to avoid consuming at the location. This message was broadcast in a social media post on Tuesday, the 27th, but was removed a few hours later.

In the image shared on Instagram, the establishment requested that left-wing voters and those labeled as 'thugs' not make purchases there. Although the place stated it could not prohibit entry to these people, it emphasized that it had no interest in serving customers politically aligned with the left.

Subsequently, the image was deleted, and the pizzeria issued a second statement informing that it had been notified by the Public Prosecutor's Office to remove the content. The establishment declared that it would comply with the determination but would continue defending its convictions.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Paraíba (MPPB) did not officially confirm any notification directed at the restaurant.

Additionally, during October, the pizzeria advertised all-you-can-eat promotions for the 4th and 25th, corresponding to the 2026 electoral rounds. The price announced in the photos was R$ 22, a value that coincidentally corresponds to the number of candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.

In another context, on Sunday (25th), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was reelected with 64,256,232 votes (51.79%), surpassing Flávio Bolsonaro (PL), who obtained 59,826,041 votes (48.21%) in the second round. In João Pessoa, Lula was the most voted candidate, reaching 266,096 votes, while Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) registered 228,231 votes. This data was released by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

Chef JPB teaches rib risotto recipe with plantain scallops

Chef JPB demonstrated on Saturday (24) the detailed preparation of a rib risotto that includes plantain scallops. The recipe was presented by Chef Felipe Nascimento, who detailed all the necessary ingredients and the cooking method for this variation of the dish.

Ingredients

For the preparation, 180g of shredded beef ribs, 160g of arborio rice, 40g of finely grated Parmesan cheese, 30g of cold butter, 100ml of hot rib broth, three slices of plantain, balsamic reduction to taste, chopped parsley to taste, cherry tomatoes, beetroot sprouts, and aioli to taste are needed.

Preparation Method

The process begins by heating the rib broth in a separate pot. Subsequently, the arborio rice is placed in another pot and gradually receives the hot broth, continuing until the grains absorb the starch and reach an al dente point.

Once the rice is cooked correctly, the shredded beef ribs are added and mixed carefully to ensure the meat is evenly distributed. After this stage, the heat is turned off, and the grated Parmesan and cold butter are incorporated. The mixture is stirred until the rice acquires a creamy, shiny, and homogeneous appearance.

Finally, the plantain slices are grilled in a frying pan until golden and caramelized. The chef advises that the ideal texture of the banana should remain soft inside.

To finish the dish, the risotto is placed in a serving dish and decorated with the plantain scallops. The final touch is given by adding the balsamic reduction, small dots of aioli, cherry tomatoes, and the beetroot sprouts, making the rib risotto with plantain ready to be served.
