New Denim Rules: The Trend Towards Volume and Silhouette Expansion in Fashion

The theme of volume dominates fashion runways. Dior presented jeans with a large and baggy cut, Alaïa gave the leg a round, ceramic shape, while Zimmermann and Ralph Lauren literally turned trousers into balloons. After a decade where jeans hugged the body, fashion has finally allowed for a sense of relief.

The author posits the theory of 'soft armor.' Data from the World Health Organization indicates that one in six people globally experiences loneliness. Furthermore, American data on time distribution shows that daily communication has decreased from 45 to 35 minutes over the last two decades, and for young people aged 15–24, time spent with friends has reduced to 35 minutes per day.

Back in the eighties, prognosticator Faith Popcorn called the desire to isolate at home 'cocooning.' However, the situation has changed: people are moving this 'cocoon' outside, displaying it in their clothing. Balloon-like jeans create an air cushion around the leg, and barrel-shaped denim deviates from the knee instead of clinging to it. Very wide legs flow over the body and trail behind.

These shapes are perceived as a kind of protection, a beautiful barrier between the body and a world that seems more complex. Denim acts as soft armor.

Fashion

There is a clear emphasis on proportions on the streets. Denim jackets have become XXL size, with shoulders dropped far past the bone, sleeves covering the joints, and a boxy silhouette ending around the hip level. Beneath them are very baggy and expressive jeans that gather at the shoes and touch the pavement.

Magazine W asserts that large and baggy jeans 'will not disappear,' citing Dior and Ann Demeulemeester. This is not an attempt to hide; on the contrary, it is a statement. After years of pressure to 'shrink to fit,' taking up space has become a fashionable declaration. Skinny jeans were associated with display, with being seen, formed, and measured.

Denim originally served as protection before becoming a fashion trend. Elaborately decorated work trousers were created for miners and workers from dense fabric capable of withstanding hard labor. Modern volume references this past but differs from the bagginess of the nineties through its intentionality. Volume without structure collapses; volume that maintains its shape is designed.

Rips on the thighs and flared knees have given way to constructiveness, including curved seams and paneled knees. Jeans have evolved from a basic item to a piece with a distinct frame. Nili Lotan and Frame transformed the barrel leg into sculpture, and the Arc model from G-Star, first presented in 2007 and returned in October, demonstrates the longevity of this concept. Its curved seams twist the fabric around the leg, creating a cut for a moving body, not a static one.

Fashion

In South Africa, the instinct for protection is very palpable, and it is difficult to view the runways without considering this aspect. At Fashion Week SS26 in South Africa, On Duty jeans by Alison Kgomo were paired with Black Coffee and Helon Melon in voluminous silhouettes resembling bubbles. Robyn Agulhas presented SinCHUI, which shaped baggy trousers using architectural panels, while Kingsley Baloyi created Undefined Outdoor Clothing, utilizing wide proportions with padded inserts. This is literally built-in protection.

Palette of Solitude

Fashion has always reflected the mood of the times. A new look from Dior in response to wartime rationing included luxurious skirts, and today the mood is conveyed through dyes. Miu Miu, Khaite, and Altuzarra chose near-black indigo, which is the denim equivalent of drawing curtains. Chocolate brown dominated the SAFW runways, bringing earthy tones of soil and wood to the collection. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Pantone presented Cloud Dancer—a light gray shade named 'whisper of calm and peace in a noisy world' and is the color of the year. Fabric manufacturers are returning to using plant indigo and dyeing over blue, instead of bleaching, which ensures less abrasiveness and greater color depth.

To master the new rhythm, one must understand that relaxed fit means ease in the seat and thigh area, not sagging at the waist. Straight cuts should form a clean column. Wide cuts imply real volume from the hip, enough to cover the shoes. The barrel should flare at the knees and taper towards the ankles. Super baggy cuts mean exactly this, so it is recommended to take a larger size, fasten the belt, and allow the fabric to gather.

Thus, one should wear volume. Throw on a huge boxy work jacket or a wonderfully large boiler jacket and button it up. Keep your favorite items, even if they have holes, because no one will confiscate them. The path forward is clear: show up and take up your space. The world may press down in any way, but your jeans now support you.

Chevrolet launches streetwear collection in partnership with brand BAW Clothing, inspired by racing overalls

Chevrolet has established a new collaboration with the São Paulo brand BAW Clothing, aiming to adapt the look of race tracks to everyday wear. The collection, named BAW Racing by Chevrolet Motorsports, features nine items with a retro aesthetic inspired by competitions and is already available for purchase on the BAW website.

This is the second time the brands have joined forces; the first partnership occurred in 2025 and focused on reinterpreting elements of the Opala in accessories and clothing, celebrating GM's 100 years in Brazil.

Gustavo Aguiar, Marketing Director for General Motors South America, explained that the goal of this initiative is to create a closer connection between the brand and the consumer's lifestyle. The executive stated that the collection 'reflects all of Chevrolet's legacy in motorsports with a modern and bold touch.'

The designs were developed by BAW stylists in conjunction with Lucas Karra, the founder of the brand along with his brothers in 2014, in the Bom Retiro neighborhood, located in the central area of São Paulo. Highlights of the line include the jacket and twill pants, both adorned with embroidery and applications that evoke the pilots' attire when worn together.

Furthermore, the collection includes three unisex t-shirts—two of which are in an oversized model and two are babylooks—a cap, and a tote bag. According to Karra, the jacket has an unprecedented feature in the Brazilian market: the customer receives the piece in one way and can use it in another.

The collection's promotion includes an online game, developed in partnership with BrandsDecoded. In this game, the participant selects the desired driver and circuit, and upon finishing the race, obtains discount coupons to purchase the products. The drivers featured in the game are portrayed by presenters and guests of Podpah, a podcast hosted by Igão and Mítico.

The collection's presence will also be felt on the tracks through a temporary store (pop-up) that will accompany the final stages of the NASCAR Brasil and Stock Car seasons. This store will be present at the NASCAR Brasil stage in Brasília on November 28 and 29, and will conclude its journey at the Stock Car stage in São Paulo, between December 12 and 13.

New Haval H7 model from GWM launched in South Africa with updated design and competitive prices

GWM has introduced a brand new Haval H7 model in South Africa. This second generation replaces the previous version, offering a more robust silhouette, a more expressive appearance, and an expanded range of powertrains, including petrol, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options.

The model line includes six variants: from the budget-friendly 2.0T at R554,900 to the flagship 280 kW Hi4, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, priced at R794,900. The previous H7 model, based on the Big Dog platform, only arrived in South Africa in early 2025 and was replaced less than two years later by this updated version, which GWM claims better meets local expectations.

Design and Ride Height

The new H7 features a long bonnet and a vertical stance. Its length is 4,800 mm, and the wheelbase reaches 2,738 mm. The vehicle is equipped with 255/60 R19 tires and a standard full-size spare wheel, unlike temporary space savers. The ground clearance is 210 mm, the approach angle is 25 degrees, the departure angle is 32 degrees, and the wading depth reaches 580 mm, giving it characteristics suitable for rural or coastal travel. Nevertheless, the H7 is a modern monocoque SUV, not an extreme off-roader like its competitors.

Powertrain Options

Three types of powertrains implement a well-thought-out strategy. The 2.0T petrol engine uses a turbocharged 4N20A engine from GWM, producing 170 kW and 380 Nm via a patented transverse nine-speed wet dual clutch. In two-wheel drive, it accelerates in 9.0 seconds, and in four-wheel drive, in 8.6 seconds, with both variants having a top speed of 200 km/h, making it a choice for drivers who value responsiveness and torque.

The 1.5T HEV hybrid system provides 182 kW of power and 540 Nm of torque, consuming 5.3 L/100 km in the NEDC cycle and reaching 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, without requiring external charging and offering better fuel economy and a stronger low-speed burst. The flagship 1.5T PHEV Hi4 sits at the top of the range. Its two-wheel drive variant produces 240 kW and 540 Nm, accelerating in 8.4 seconds, and has an electric range of 130 km. The most powerful four-wheel drive PHEV Hi4 reaches 280 kW and 670 Nm, accelerating in 5.8 seconds, and offers an electric range of 115 km. Both PHEV models support Vehicle-to-Load functionality up to 6 kW, ideal for running a refrigerator, lighting, or small tools during power outages or camping.

Off-Road Capability

The all-wheel-drive systems are properly configured. For the ICE 4WD, it uses a sixth-generation Haldex from BorgWarner, capable of distributing torque in 200 milliseconds. In the PHEV Hi4, the all-wheel drive is managed by a dedicated 150 kW electric motor that directs weight rearward to improve grip and fast start feel. Both variants are equipped with an electronically controlled rear differential lock, which transfers 100 percent of available torque to both rear wheels and automatically disengages above 40 km/h. The ICE 4WD model additionally features Off-Road Cruise, allowing the driver to set a speed between 7 and 15 km/h and letting the car manage throttle and brakes while the driver focuses on steering. The availability of nine driving modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport, Snow, Mud, Sand, Grass/Gravel, Rough Road, and Auto, makes this system one of the most versatile in its class.

Interior and Daily Use

The interior is designed with real-life situations in mind. Two displays combine a 12.3-inch digital cluster with a large 15.6-inch anti-glare and fingerprint-resistant touchscreen, while a 9-inch head-up display projects speed and navigation into the driver's field of view. Voice control covers 17 functions, allowing hands to remain on the wheel. Standard across the entire lineup are 50W wireless charging, a full 10-speaker premium audio system, and a panoramic roof blocking 90.5 percent of UV radiation. The front seats are equipped with three-level heating and ventilation. The trunk capacity is 586 liters and can expand to a substantial 1,404 liters, sufficient for camping gear, bicycles, or a week's luggage. Furthermore, the trunk includes a 220V, 400W outlet for ICE and HEV models, and up to 2.2 kW for PHEV, which is very convenient for outdoor recreation. Forty-three storage spots help maintain order.

Safety is ensured by six airbags and Level 2 ADAS, which includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, rear side collision warning and braking, as well as a 360-degree camera with a transparent chassis view for maneuvering in tight spaces.
