Soweto Fashion Week to take place in Johannesburg with a showcase of local fashion

Soweto Fashion Week is preparing to return to Johannesburg, scheduling three days of showcasing local fashion, rising talents, and established designers. The event will take place from November 5 to 7 at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, Joburg.

The presentation of the Spring/Summer 2026 season will be dedicated to celebrating South African creativity. The collections will explore vibrant colors, unique prints, dynamism, and cultural identity.

Founded in 2011, this platform has created opportunities for designers to present their work, establish industry connections, and reach wider markets over 15 years. Organizers note that over 26 seasons, Soweto Fashion Week has supported more than 120 designers and 1000 models on the runway.

The first evening will feature nine emerging designers, including RFL Studios, Zimisele, and Shirley Joseph. Students from fashion faculties at the University of Johannesburg and Tshwane University of Technology will also present their work.

The second evening will see the participation of the returning brand Mbobo Movement, as well as labels such as Precious Lulu Couture, KwaZulu Fashion Hut, and Originally Kasified.

The closing night will combine fashion and entertainment: television presenter Ayanda Nhlapo will showcase the House of Ayanda collection, and Afro-soul singer Wanda Baloyi will present Wanda Wear.

Soweto Fashion Week continues to serve as a platform enabling local designers to develop their brands and present South African fashion to a broader audience.

How to style polka dots this summer while ditching conservative looks

Polka dots are currently very much in fashion, and this time, a safe approach is not necessary. This playful print is actively appearing on social media, celebrities are showing it off on red carpets, and fashion stores are already including polka dots in their summer collections.

The polka dot print now adorns dresses, shirts, trousers, shoes, bags, and swimsuits, as well as manicures. Although polka dots are not a new element, they have existed for decades, often associated with a timeless but sometimes overly staid look.

However, the mood has changed this season. It is recommended to choose bolder prints, unexpected color combinations, and looks that do not take themselves too seriously. Judging by how celebrities dress, the more, the better.

Kendall Jenner was completely covered in polka dots at the Academy Gala in Los Angeles in 2026, including her shoes. Her sister Kim Kardashian also used this look at the premiere of the second season of her series 'All's Fair' on Hulu in Rome.

Nevertheless, to join the trend, you don't have to follow this example. Whether you prefer a subtle hint of the print or want polka dots to be the central element, there are many ways to enjoy them this summer.

Mix Prints

If you always thought that stripes and floral patterns should stay within their boundaries, this is an invitation to reconsider those rules. Polka dots can surprisingly pair well with other patterns. Try wearing polka dot trousers with a bright floral top or a graphic t-shirt with a polka dot skirt.

Stripes are also an option for bolder experiments. The main thing is to find a combination that looks deliberate. You can limit yourself to colors from one palette or let contrasting shades dominate.

If you are not yet ready to combine prints head-to-toe, start with one patterned item of clothing and build the entire look around it.

Go Beyond Black and White

Classic black and white dots will always be appropriate in a summer wardrobe. They are easy to style, look elegant, and will not go out of style when the trend changes.

But why stop there? Chocolate brown and blue are currently popular in fashion, and oily yellow continues to be used in summer looks. A refreshing change to the traditional monochrome combination could be pink dots on a black background or brown dots on cream.

A colored polka dot dress or shirt is a simple way to integrate this trend into your wardrobe without overhauling your entire style.

Experiment with Fabrics

The print can be playful, but that doesn't mean it has to look casual. A silky maxi skirt with polka dots paired with a simple blouse can work perfectly for an evening outing. A light chiffon shirt offers a softer version of this trend, and a flowing polka dot dress suits any occasion—from weekends to summer celebrations.

It is worth considering denim, cotton, and linen for daytime outfits. The same print can look completely different depending on the fabric and silhouette, offering a way to make it unique.

Let Accessories Speak for Themselves

If you are not ready to fully switch to a polka dot dress, start small. A polka dot scarf, bag, or a pair of satin kitten heel shoes can add playfulness to a simple outfit. You can even try polka dot nail polish if you are not ready to wear the print entirely.

Accessories are also a good way to experiment with bold colors without investing in a statement piece of clothing. If you already have a polka dot item in your closet, now is the time to dig it out again.

The charm of this trend is that it does not require a complete wardrobe overhaul or strict adherence to style rules. Wear a little dots or a lot—mix them with other prints or keep the rest of the look simple. This summer, polka dots are less about following rules and more about fun in fashion.
