After winning the T20 World Cup title with the Indian team, Suryakumar Yadav will now serve as captain in domestic cricket competitions. He has been entrusted to lead teams in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This decision was made by the Selection Committee of the Mumbai Cricket Association.
According to a report by Times of India (TOI), Suryakumar will lead the team in both white-ball tournaments this season. It is worth noting that he received this responsibility at a time when he was excluded from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad last month. Although he stated his availability for the entire domestic season, selectors did not include him in the red-ball team, citing that Suryakumar had not played enough red-ball matches recently.
Suryakumar's return to white-ball cricket and his appointment as captain have changed the dynamic. The Mumbai team's campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is scheduled to begin on November 14th in Kolkata. In Elite Group D, alongside Mumbai, are teams from Hyderabad, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Odisha, Uttarakhand, and Vidarbha. Mumbai's first match will be against Hyderabad.
According to a source within the Mumbai Cricket Association, the Selection Committee decided to make Suryakumar captain in both white-ball tournaments this season. Practice matches will take place on November 7th and 9th before the team selection. The Mumbai team will be selected on November 9th, and players will travel to Kolkata on November 11th.
This season promises to be special for Suryakumar Yadav. Under his leadership, the Indian team won the T20 World Cup 2026 title. Now he will share his captaincy experience with his domestic team, Mumbai. Suryakumar, known for his explosive hitting in international cricket, is now responsible for bringing home the Mumbai title.
Mumbai domestic cricket has a rich history. This team has always shown strong contenders in both the Ranji Trophy and limited-overs tournaments. Thus, having a player with international experience like Suryakumar as a leader could prove to be a significant advantage for the team.
After India became the T20 World Cup champion, Suryakumar Yadav returned to domestic cricket. In October, he represented the MIG Cricket Club in the MCA President's Cup T20 tournament. Participating in this competition, he regained his form in competitive cricket. Now, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, his goal is not only to demonstrate batting prowess but also to lead the team to a title as captain.
Receiving the captaincy in white-ball cricket after being dropped from the Ranji squad gives Suryakumar's domestic season a new turn. Mumbai expects not only powerful performances but also leadership capable of guiding the team to the finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare Trophy.
