US Stock Market Rises After Democrats Win Congress, Data Center Stocks Fall

The US stock market showed broad growth on Wednesday as investors speculated that a divided Washington following the Democrats' victory in the midterms might limit sharp policy shifts. However, shares of data center companies faced pressure due to concerns over potential tightening of artificial intelligence regulations.

Democrats gained control of the Senate and the House of Representatives, achieving unexpected victories in Republican strongholds for the first time in many years, which was seen as a voter reaction against President Donald Trump.

The prospect of fewer large-scale legislative changes boosted the value of some major technology stocks, while companies involved in AI infrastructure development lost ground. Scott Chornert, Head of US Equity Strategy at Citi Research, noted: 'The general sentiment is that this is a cleansing event, so the election uncertainty is now behind us.'

Among hyperscalers, Amazon.com rose by 7.1%, Meta Platforms increased by 1.6%, and Alphabet showed a rise of 3.4%. As of 9:46 AM Eastern Time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 1203.07 points, or 2.30%, reaching 52,989.79. The S&P 500 added 129.88 points, or 1.72%, totaling 7,698.80, and the Nasdaq Composite increased by 540.38 points, or 2.13%, reaching 25,912.39.

The dollar weakened against most currencies, and long-term Treasury yields declined. Trump acknowledged that the US-Israel war against Iran played a role in his party's electoral defeat.

Companies led by Elon Musk, such as SpaceX and Tesla, were among the laggards, declining by 1.9% and 3.9% respectively. Musk spent nearly half a billion dollars supporting Republican candidates, including efforts to retain Republican control in Texas, where both companies are based.

Eight out of 11 S&P 500 sectors traded higher, led by consumer discretionary goods. After fast-food chain McDonald's beat quarterly profit forecasts, its shares rose by 3.9%, and payments company Block jumped 15% after raising its annual gross profit forecast.

Focus on AI Trading

AI trading will be under close scrutiny after Democrats gained votes in key data center states, including Texas and Georgia, where public discontent over the rapid expansion of the industry is growing. Chornert added: 'It is quite clear that AI trading will face some hurdles there... If you accelerate or change the pace of data center construction, you start changing the fundamental trajectory for many of these providers.'

Recent pressure on the AI sector stems from investor caution regarding Big Tech's rising AI spending with little evidence of adequate returns. The tech-focused Nasdaq-100 confirmed a technical correction on Monday. Shares of data center operators IREN, Hut 8, Applied Digital, and Core Scientific fell between 1.2% and 13%.

Chip manufacturers' stocks remained largely unchanged despite AMD's forecast of faster-than-expected growth in 2027 amid increased data center sales; the chip maker's stock was last up 4.8% during volatile trading. Defense contractors Northrop Grumman, RTX, and Lockheed Martin shares dropped sharply as Trump's request for a $1.5 trillion budget may now face a more difficult path in Congress.

Companies related to solar and clean energy rose, as the Democratic victory could strengthen expectations of continued federal support for clean energy development. The Invesco Solar ETF index rose by 8.3%. On the NYSE, the number of advancing issuers exceeded the number of declining ones at a ratio of 3.6 to 1, and on Nasdaq—at a ratio of 3.49 to 1. The S&P 500 recorded 42 new 52-week highs and three new lows, while the Nasdaq Composite registered 105 new highs and 54 new lows.

Stock Market Shows Growth: Mukesh Ambani's Shares and Sensex Index Rise by 1000 Points

The stock market showed significant activity on the first day of the trading week. Following fluctuations last week, the Sensex and Nifty indices demonstrated rapid growth at the opening of trading on Monday.

The Sensex index, comprising 30 shares from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), rose by 1000 points from the opening, surpassing the 75 thousand mark. Meanwhile, the Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also accelerated, making a jump of more than 200 points.

Rapid Start for Sensex and Nifty

An analysis of the market rally on Monday shows that the Sensex opened with a gain compared to the close last Friday at 74,459. In just a few minutes, it reached 75,471, an increase of 1012 points. The Nifty index, moving in sync with the Sensex, also showed growth. This index of 50 shares opened above its previous level of 23,053 and then made a sharp jump of 239 points, trading at 23,292.

Reliance Shares Become a Rocket

The largest contribution to the market rally came from the share of Reliance Industries, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Before the article was written, the Reliance share was trading at 1241 rupees with a growth of 6.70%. This rise in the value of the country's most valuable company caused a wave of optimism in the market. Thanks to this growth, the company's capitalization reached 16.77 lakh crore rupees.

The rise in Reliance shares is due to the company's impressive results for the second quarter of the financial year 27. Many brokerage firms gave positive forecasts after these results. During the period from July to September, the company demonstrated excellent performance thanks to business growth in petrochemicals (O2C), digital services, and retail trade. Reliance's consolidated revenue grew by 28% year-on-year, reaching a record 3.62 lakh crore rupees, while EBITDA increased by 24%, amounting to 62,409 crore rupees. Reliance's net profit increased by 34% to 29,550 crore rupees.

Not only did Reliance shares show impressive results, but shares of other large companies also soared at the opening of trading. Among them were Tata Steel Share (growth of 4%), NTPC Share (growth of 3.40%), Maruti Share (growth of 2.80%), BEL Share (growth of 2.40%), and Asian Paints Share (growth of 2.10%). Additionally, in the category of mid-sized companies, Dixon Share (growth of 6.50%), Phoenix Ltd Share (growth of 3.40%), Glenmark Share (growth of 2.80%), Hindustan Petroleum Share (growth of 2.60%), and Suzlon Share (growth of 2.10%) rose.

Fed decision triggers sharp stock market surge: Sensex rises by 600 points

On the fourth trading day, there was a sudden shift in the dynamics of the Sensex and Nifty indices on the stock market. After a slow start to trading, both indices began to rise rapidly. The Sensex index, comprising 30 shares from the Bombay Stock Exchange, jumped by 600 points, while the Nifty of the National Stock Exchange rose by more than 150 points.

This significant growth is linked to events in the US. The stock market opened in the green zone, recovering from the previous day's decline. Although the initial rise was moderate, the situation changed sharply after about an hour, and both indices continued their upward movement at high speed.

The Sensex opened at 73,268, slightly above the previous day's close of 73,246, and then quickly reached 73,862. Similarly, Nifty, starting from a close of 22,690, rose to 22,874.

Among the companies that showed strong growth during this sudden market wave, large corporations were prominent. In the category of large companies on the BSE, stocks such as Adani Ports Share (4.10%), Power Grid Share (4.05%), Kotak Bank Share (3.10%), ITC Share (2.50%), Eternal Share (2.36%), and HUL Share (2.10%), as well as Jio Platforms Share (4.10%), saw gains.

Regarding mid-sized companies, stocks like Apl Apollo Share (3%), Paytm Share (2.90%), and Nykaa Share (2%) demonstrated an increase. Among small companies, growth was noted in Acutaas Share (6.50%), GESHIP Share (5%), Manappuram Share (4.50%), and CUB Share (4.20%).

There are three main reasons explaining this rise in the stock market. One is related to the US. The US Federal Reserve (US FED) announced on Wednesday that it would maintain the current policy rate. Furthermore, there is a decrease in crude oil prices. At the time of writing, the price of Brent Crude fell to $113. Additionally, foreign investor sentiment improved: FPIs made purchases worth about 900 crore rupees in the previous trading day, injecting vitality into the market.
