Visitors to the 45th Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) can sign up for adult membership at the Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) with a 50 percent discount from the regular price. This promotion is valid throughout the fair.
The offer reduces the annual membership fee from 160 dirhams to 75 dirhams, including VAT, giving book lovers the opportunity to use library services and educational resources even after the conclusion of the 12-day event, which opened to the public today.
In addition to the discount, SPL invites visitors to look beyond reading and learn how libraries have preserved knowledge, shaped civilizations, and sustained stories across generations.
As part of the 'Library of Civilization' program, SPL will host seven events dedicated to the history of libraries, the book creation process, and the experiences of authors and researchers at the 45th SIBF, running from November 4 to 15 at the Sharjah Expo Centre under the theme 'Made of Stories.' The program is structured around three main tracks: 'Book in Focus,' 'Behind the Scenes,' and 'Grand Book Club.'
Eman Bushlaibi, Director of SPL, emphasized that libraries are more than just repositories of books; they reflect the journey knowledge has taken through generations, helping to shape societies. She stated: 'Libraries tell the story of how human knowledge has evolved through the efforts of generations of scholars, writers, and researchers who collected, documented, and passed it on.'
Through this program, SPL hopes to help visitors understand the effort invested in preserving this collective memory while stimulating the younger generation's deeper interest in reading. Bushlaibi added that familiarizing youth with the history of libraries is closely linked to encouraging reading and utilizing the educational resources available today. She also noted that libraries should serve as platforms for interaction and discovery, allowing readers to engage with authors and researchers and better understand the process of knowledge creation and verification.
The 'Book in Focus' series will present visitors with various historical periods, featuring discussions centered on Islamic and Andalusian heritage. Sheikha Al Mutairi, writer and poet and Secretary-General of the Emirates Writers Union, will discuss her book 'Days of Books' during a session titled 'What Books Said' on Thursday, November 5, at 5:00 PM. Drawing on years of experience among bookshelves, she will share stories from her interactions with books.
On Friday, November 6, at 5:00 PM, Emirati author Ahmed Rashid bin Fahad will examine the fall of Granada and its human and historical consequences in his book 'Granada After the Fall: The History of an Invincible People' during a session called 'What History Said.' The program will also explore how knowledge moved between cultures. Dr. Mashad Al Allaf, Professor of Philosophy of Science, Ethics, and Logic at the University of Sharjah, will conduct a session titled 'What Arabic Said' on November 13, exploring the influence of Arab civilization on the West and the transmission of scientific knowledge and terminology from Arabic into Latin languages.
While some sessions will focus on history captured in books, others will allow visitors to look behind the scenes to understand the research, experience, and discoveries that shape published work. The 'Behind the Scenes' pillar opens on Saturday, November 7, with a presentation by Dr. Hamad Al Jabri, who will discuss 'The Art of Travel Notes.' Based on his adventures in Latin America, he will examine how encounters with different cultures and places can become material for travel literature.
On November 12, Dr. Sami Al Nakbi, a professor at Ad-Daid University, will share his experience searching for rare sources, including his work with the Islamic State in Andalusia, during a session titled 'Books That Shaped History.' For Emirati writer and researcher Fahad Ali Al Mamari, collecting books has been an end in itself. In the session 'In Search of Rare Books' on Saturday, November 14, he will talk about his experience creating a personal library of about 12,000 volumes and searching for rare books and reference materials.
The program also includes participation from young readers through the 'Grand Book Club,' organized in collaboration with the Khorfakkan Youth Center on Sunday, November 8, at 11:00 AM. Participants will discuss 'The Stabbing Dagger,' presented in comic book format, allowing young readers to immerse themselves in the narrative through graphic literature.
Visitors can take advantage of the 50 percent membership discount by registering at the Sharjah Public Libraries booth in Hall 4 (K2) during the fair.
