Open Bank in Uzbekistan Receives First License to Operate as Islamic Bank
"Open bank" has become the first in the country to receive a license to operate as an Islamic bank, which occurred on October 23. This was reported by the Central Bank's press service.
According to the decision of the Central Bank's management dated October 23, under number 28/1, the bank was issued license No. 1-I. This license grants the right to conduct Islamic financial operations stipulated by the Law "On Banks and Banking Activities."
In accordance with the legislation, the following financial services are permitted within the scope of an Islamic bank's activities. Unlike traditional lending with interest, Islamic financial activities are based on contracts such as trade financing, leasing, partnership, and profit sharing. The bank's income is determined depending on the type of contract.
The compliance of Islamic financial operations with established standards is overseen by the bank's special Council for Islamic Finance. It should be noted that previously "Open bank" operated under the name "Smart bank," which was changed in September 2025.
It is worth recalling that the law defining the legal foundations of Islamic banking activities in Uzbekistan came into force on June 29, 2026. According to the plan presented to the president in March, it is planned to create two full-fledged Islamic banks and attract additional investments and deposits totaling 1 billion dollars through Islamic financial services by 2030.
The Central Bank urged citizens to check for the presence of the relevant license on the official website before using banking services.
