Jerry Flannery warns that Italy remains a dangerous opponent for the Springboks despite squad losses

Despite the absence of several key players, Springboks defensive coach Jerry Flannery warned that Italy presents a dangerous opponent, especially during set pieces at the goal line and when given attacking opportunities.

For this reason, the teams will show great respect to the Italians during the match, which will take place on Saturday at the Allianz Stadium in Turin. This will be the first Nations Championship match in November, starting at 14:45 local time.

The South African team decided to field almost a full squad, not wanting to debut several players who lack international experience. The world champions are determined to build a solid foundation before upcoming matches against France and Ireland in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Italy is missing around sixteen players, including important figures such as Juan Ignacio Brex, Tommaso Menoncello, and captain Michele Lamaro. However, Flannery believes these absences should not lead to underestimating the home side, pointing to the strength of their scrum, the quality of their coaching staff, and the depth they have developed in recent years.

The Irishman also recalled Italy's previous visit to Pretoria, where they brought the Springboks close to defeat despite the absence of several front-row players.

"They have a very strong set piece at the goal line. Their scrum is likely among the best in the Six Nations, and that gives them a big advantage in the game," stated the Bok defensive coach.

He added that "they are also a very well-trained team that executes fundamentals excellently. They still have players like versatile defender Ange Capuozzo, who can open up the game if given even a small chance. Obviously, they will miss Brex because he is a very good player, and Menoncello is one of the best centres in the world and incredibly powerful."

"But Italy has shown that they are building squad depth, and this will benefit them in the long run before the World Cup, as these players will get more Test-level matches. We have identified some dangerous players, but they are a very well-trained team, so we will defend against them as a unit, rather than just focusing on individuals."

Flannery acknowledged that the short preparation period creates difficulties, but noted that the Springboks are in the same situation as other teams in the Nations Championship. He emphasized that the team's familiarity with coaches and established systems eased the transition, as much of the work done during the Rugby World Cup rivalry is still fresh in the players' minds, despite the need for constant team improvement.
