Dubai announces registration for the world's first school esports championship in 2027

Dubai is preparing to become a global hub for school esports by hosting the first international esports tournament open to students from all types of educational institutions, including public, state-funded, and private schools.

Registration has opened for the event named 'EGAMES DUBAI27'. This tournament will bring together students from various countries who can compete in esports competitions, represent their schools and nations, and fight for the title of EGAMES World Champion.

The initiative was developed jointly by Varkey Group and British Esports Federation with the support of national esports federations and educational institutions. Fourteen national esports federations have already confirmed their participation in the competition, including the Emirates Esports Federation, and more organizations are expected to join in the coming months.

The first live final will take place at GEMS School of Research & Innovation (SRI) in Dubai in April 2027. This event will introduce an international school level of competition to the emirate, which continues to strengthen its position in the global gaming and esports industry.

For students, this competition is positioned not just as an opportunity to demonstrate gaming skills. Organizers emphasize that it will help young people develop qualities such as teamwork, communication, resilience, and digital skills, while also introducing them to career opportunities in gaming, technology, and related fields.

Students enrolled in the 2026/27 academic year can participate. To qualify for the finals in Dubai, participants must first go through national tournaments organized by the respective country's esports federation.

The live championship will feature three disciplines: EA SPORTS FC 27, Rocket League, and a Minecraft building tournament. Winning teams will receive medals and other awards, including scholarships, experience participating in the Esports Nations Cup, and new equipment for school facilities.

Sunny Varkey, Chairman and Founder of Varkey Group and Gems Education, stated that the goal of this initiative is to provide young people with opportunities for interaction and learning through competition. He noted: 'Our goal is to bring young people from all over the world together, giving them the chance to learn, connect, create, compete, and lead.'

He added that the idea was to help students realize how the skills gained in esports can translate into opportunities beyond gaming. 'We want students to see how the skills they develop can open doors to technology, gaming, digital creativity, and much more. Their potential deserves development, and their achievements deserve recognition on the world stage.'

Gems Education, a leading global provider of K-12 education, has joined this initiative as an educational partner. Organizations from the education and technology sectors have also been invited to support the competition.

British Esports President and Gems Esports Ambassador Chester King reported that the federation has been working to establish esports as an educational and competitive opportunity for students since 2016. He referenced the success of existing school competitions, noting that the Student Champs series already attracts over 600 school teams across four disciplines, and its live finals draw hundreds of thousands of spectators.

'Now we want to develop and encourage global competition between countries, so partnering with Varkey Group was an obvious choice for launching EGAMES. We have already spoken with several leading national esports federations that run school championships in their countries,' he said.

Dubai's selection as the host city comes amid growing investments in gaming, esports, and youth talent development. The emirate is actively expanding its gaming ecosystem through programs such as the Dubai Programme for Gaming 2033, launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence.

Other efforts include a youth and education engagement program under the Dubai Esports and Games Festival, the establishment of the Dubai Gaming Committee under the Dubai Media Council, and the inclusion of esports in the list of priority developing sports in the Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan for 2033.

Alongside the championship, organizers plan to hold an education summit for teachers, partners, and other stakeholders in Dubai. Discussions will cover esports education, digital skills, artificial intelligence, child protection, coaching, and the skills needed for youth in future careers.

The educational potential of esports has also been recognized by the Commonwealth Youth Programme, which views it as a pathway for youth engagement, employment, and digital skills development. Lane Robinson, former Head of Social Policy at the Commonwealth Secretariat, stated that esports offers youth opportunities that extend beyond entertainment. He added that Commonwealth youth ministers recognize the potential of esports in stimulating youth participation and technological innovation.

Schools, national federations, and educational partners interested in participating or supporting this initiative can find more information on the website www.egames.gg. Among the 14 federations that have confirmed participation in EGAMES DUBAI27 are representatives from the UAE, the UK, Argentina, Brazil, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Ireland, Jordan, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, and Zimbabwe.

Dubai Fitness Challenge 2026 has started: 12 activities available at Kite Beach

Today, October 31st, marked the first day of the Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) 2026. Dubai residents now have numerous opportunities to stay active, including trampoline jumping, obstacle courses, beach volleyball, and boxing.

The DP World 30x30 Fitness Village at Kite Beach officially opened to the public, celebrating the tenth anniversary of this event. During an exclusive media preview on October 30th, Khaleej Times explored this beach fitness zone as final preparations were underway for the opening.

This complex integrates sports activities, fitness classes, and interactive events designed for people of all ages and fitness levels. The goal is to encourage residents and visitors to engage in 30 minutes of physical activity daily for 30 days.

Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a registration area before several activity zones located along the beach. A central main stage is used for fitness sessions, while separate spaces for sports, strength training, wellness, and family activities offer diverse ways to move.

Among the attractive features is the Amazon Rebounder, where participants can take part in energetic trampoline workouts. This activity offers an alternative approach to traditional cardio training, combining jumping movements with a full-body workout.

For those seeking a serious physical challenge, there is the Nissan Navara Pro Obstacle Course, which tests participants' balance, strength, and coordination as they navigate a series of obstacles. Another specialized zone, Skechers Beach Warrior, offers fitness trials for more demanding training.

Team sport enthusiasts can head to the DP World Cricket Arena, and nearby are courts for beach football and beach volleyball, allowing friends and families to compete and exercise on the sand.

A dedicated court has also been allocated for basketball enthusiasts, and the Wasl Padel Arena provides an alternative for racket sports lovers. For skateboarders, the Emirates Skate Park is equipped with a special space for practicing skating skills.

Those who prefer structured workouts can explore the Puff fitness zones, which include spinning classes, circuit training, and the Engine Room for strength and conditioning exercises. Additionally, the DIEZ zones allow participants to try boxing, mixed martial arts, and high-intensity interval training to test endurance, strength, and overall physical fitness.

For those preferring a slower pace, the CBD Wellness zone offers wellness activities, while the dedicated Whoop Pilates, Body Work, and Lift zones are intended for those interested in flexibility, body conditioning, and strength training.

Water sports are also part of the complex's program, providing an opportunity to experience fitness outside of a traditional gym setting. In addition to the main sports areas, the complex includes the Talabat Playground for younger visitors.

The main stage is one of the central attractions, hosting a rotating program of group fitness classes throughout the challenge. Furthermore, the Whoop Run Club Hub serves as a designated meeting point for running enthusiasts, and additional partner activations are planned throughout the complex.

During the tour, organizers emphasized the variety of planned activities, noting that some zones are still being prepared for the official public opening. The complex is designed so that visitors can explore various training stations rather than focusing on a single activity, allowing them to combine sports, cardio, strength training, and wellness in one visit.

The DP World 30x30 Fitness Village at Kite Beach will operate from October 31st to November 29th, with free entry for visitors who register on site. Operating hours are from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM on weekdays, and from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. Although activities and classes are free, visitors wishing to use specific sports facilities are advised to book sessions in advance.

The Dubai Fitness Challenge was launched in 2017 by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and calls on people to dedicate 30 minutes to exercise every day for 30 days.

UAE Flag Day in 2026: Information on Celebrations, Date, and School Events

After the autumn holidays conclude, parents across the UAE may already be thinking about the next school break. However, UAE Flag Day, which falls on Tuesday, November 3rd this year, does not mean an extra day off for students.

The annual national celebration involves raising the UAE flag in schools, workplaces, and homes across all emirates, with ceremonies traditionally held at 11 am.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, called on citizens and residents of the country to participate in the current celebration. In a message published on October 27th, Sheikh Mohammed asked ministries, government agencies, schools, universities, and families in all seven emirates to raise the flag.

Describing the event as a general expression of national pride, he noted that it is a moment when the country and its people unite before the symbol of their honor and glory. He concluded his address with the words: 'Long live the homeland, long live the Flag.'

What happens at 11 am?

UAE Flag Day is celebrated annually on November 3rd, marking the anniversary of the presidency of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in the UAE in 2004. This initiative was launched by Sheikh Mohammed in 2013 to encourage people across all emirates to celebrate the national flag and the values it represents. The current celebration is the 14th edition of Flag Day.

The flag raising across the country traditionally takes place at 11 am, with participation from schools, government departments, and other organizations. Parents are advised to check with their children's schools regarding the ceremony time and any special plans for November 3rd.

The UAE flag was first raised on December 2, 1971, by the country's founder, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, when the federal state was formed. For the country's diverse school communities, Flag Day also provides an opportunity to help children understand the history of the national symbol and their connection to the place they call home.

How do UAE schools celebrate Flag Day?

Schools across the UAE may hold flag-raising ceremonies, assemblies, and events that introduce students to the meaning of the national flag. During assemblies, the national anthem may be played or performed, and classroom lessons may explore the significance of the flag's red, green, white, and black colors, the country's history, and the values associated with its national identity. Some schools may also organize art projects and other flag-related activities.

The celebration will vary depending on the institution, so announcements in schools are the best source of information for parents about what their children will participate in. For younger students, these lessons can turn concepts such as unity, respect, and belonging into something they can see and experience. In a country where families come from different parts of the world, this holiday also offers an opportunity to learn about the history of the UAE and appreciate the community they are part of.

This day is dedicated not only to displaying the flag but also to understanding why it is important. School ceremonies can help children connect the national symbol with the people, history, and values that have shaped the country in which they grow up.

What do the four colors of the flag symbolize?

The UAE flag has four colors—red, green, white, and black—each carrying a specific meaning related to the country's history, values, and aspirations. According to official guidelines, the red color honors the sacrifices of previous generations who helped lay the foundations of the Union. Green symbolizes growth, prosperity, and cultural revival, while white reflects the UAE's humanitarian contribution and commitment to promoting peace and security worldwide. Black symbolizes the strength of the Emiratis and the nation's rejection of injustice and extremism.

Is UAE Flag Day a public holiday? Will schools be closed?

No. UAE Flag Day is not an official public holiday, and schools are expected to operate under normal schedule on Tuesday, November 3rd. Therefore, parents should plan for a regular school and work day unless the child's institution announces any specific changes to its schedule. This holiday does not require families to make extra childcare arrangements simply because Flag Day is being observed.

It is important not to confuse Flag Day with UAE National Day, Eid Al Ittihad, which is celebrated on December 2nd and is an official public holiday. Although Flag Day is marked through ceremonies and events rather than a day off, it remains an important annual occasion when schools and workplaces gather together in recognition of the country.

How should the UAE flag be treated?

Flag Day also provides an opportunity for families and schools to teach children proper handling and care of the national flag. According to UAE guidelines, flags must remain clean and in good condition, and damaged, faded, or discolored flags must be replaced. They should also be inspected after adverse weather and carefully folded and stored when not displayed.

Flags that are no longer suitable for use must be disposed of in a way that they do not continue to look like national flags; burning such flags is not permitted according to the provided guidelines. As November 3rd approaches, parents can check if their children's schools are planning a ceremony or class lesson and use this opportunity to talk about the history of the UAE and national symbols.
