PSL Chairman Irwin Khosa has demanded explanations from the organizers of the Soweto Derby and all involved parties regarding the unrest that occurred during the recent match between bitter rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
In the Betway Premier League match on Saturday, Pirates defeated Chiefs with a score of 2-1. However, a significant number of fans were not allowed into the FNB Stadium to prevent overcrowding.
This incident quickly went viral, and fans used social media to express their dissatisfaction. This is not the first time a derby has been marred by chaos; reports indicate that two previous matches also exceeded capacity.
Given the history of overcrowding at the Soweto Derby, which led to the disaster at Ellis Park in 2001, there are fears that a similar tragedy could recur if the problem is not addressed immediately.
Speaking during President Cyril Ramaphosa's visit to PSL offices in Parktown on Monday, Khosa stated that a report on the incident has been requested from interested parties, warning that those responsible could face public condemnation.
Khosa noted: 'There is a persistent tradition of people wanting to storm the goal. We went to Durban for the Nedbank Cup final between Chiefs and Pirates, and nothing happened. Recently, Pirates and Sundowns met in the final, and nothing happened either. So why here? There are certain actors who are not fulfilling their role, but I cannot name or disgrace them on television.'
He added: 'I have requested a briefing for Thursday to ensure that if they do not take action, we will name and disgrace them because they are letting us down.'
Khosa also pointed to recent events held at Moses Mabhida Stadium, where matches took place without such incidents. He suggested this might influence the PSL's approach when selecting venues for future major events.
'Everything works smoothly in Durban. Perhaps in the future, instead of going to FNB, we should go to Durban—they are good hosts and do everything professionally,' he concluded.
