Postpartum Depression Discussion: Parents' Emotional Struggles Hidden Behind Outer Well-being

The arrival of a new baby is often presented as one of the happiest moments in life. However, behind congratulations, baby showers, and first photos, some parents face emotional difficulties that are hard for them to put into words.

Many who experience postpartum depression feel anxiety, guilt, loneliness, and sadness, making the transition to parenthood extremely difficult. Although seeking help can change the situation, shame and fear of judgment often prevent parents from talking about what they are going through.

The reality is that they are not alone

According to a survey conducted in South Africa, 30.6% of surveyed women had symptoms of postpartum depression, highlighting the need to increase awareness and support for maternal mental health.

Kim Vermak, an author and TEDx speaker from South Africa, aims to contribute to this conversation through her book 'Taming the Monster of Postpartum Depression.' Based on her own experience, interviews with mothers and fathers, and conversations with specialists, Vermak explores the emotional challenges that can accompany becoming a parent and explains why families need better support during this period.

Her interest in this topic is deeply personal. After the birth of her first child, Vermak herself experienced postpartum depression, which prompted her to consider why so much attention is paid to the mother's physical recovery after childbirth, while her emotional state sometimes goes unnoticed.

Vermak notes: 'We live in a society that praises mothers overcoming difficulties and labels those who break down.' She continues: 'But overcoming should not come at the cost of the parent's emotional safety. Sometimes people need human connection, understanding, and the freedom to admit they are not okay, rather than just pills to mask symptoms.'

Overcoming the Silence Around Postpartum Depression

One of the key themes of the book is the importance of recognizing that the transition to parenthood looks and feels different for everyone. Although most discussions about postpartum depression focus on mothers, Vermak also includes the experiences of fathers, shedding light on the emotional complexities affecting parents and families.

The book examines various aspects of parental well-being, including sleep, nutrition, physical activity, time spent in nature, breastfeeding, and workplace mental health. It also contains the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), information on national and international support groups, and recommendations to help readers recognize when additional help is needed.

By combining personal stories and professional knowledge, Vermak hopes to give parents and caregivers a deeper understanding of postpartum depression and the importance of seeking support.

Seeking Help Is Not a Failure

The book has been endorsed by Zane Wilson, founder of the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), who expresses hope that it will foster more open conversations about parental mental health.

Wilson states: 'I hope this book encourages more open conversations about postpartum depression and parental mental health. Most importantly, I hope it reminds anyone struggling that asking for help does not mean you have failed.'

For Vermak, the main message is that parents should not push themselves to a breaking point before their emotional problems are taken seriously. By sharing experiences that often remain behind closed doors, she seeks to encourage families, healthcare professionals, and employers to become more aware of signs of distress and create environments where parents feel comfortable seeking support. Since parenting can change a life, the struggle with emotional difficulties during this period should never be undertaken alone.

Study shows that COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy does not affect children's neuropsychological development

American researchers concluded that administering the mRNA vaccine against COVID during pregnancy does not negatively affect children's neuropsychological development.

It was found that the indicators of children's neuropsychological development in the age group from 18 to 30 months are similar for babies whose mothers received the vaccination during pregnancy and for those whose mothers did not receive the vaccination.

To assess child development, scientists used the ASQ-3 questionnaire and also applied a number of other methods. The results of this scientific study were officially published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

887 thousand new cases of cervical cancer registered worldwide in 2023

According to a study conducted by the Global Burden of Disease, 887 thousand new cases of cervical cancer were identified worldwide during 2023. Additionally, 369 thousand deaths from this disease were recorded.

The highest burden of morbidity falls on developing countries in Africa. Nevertheless, a significant decrease in age-standardized mortality from cervical cancer has been noted since 1990.

Projections indicate that age-standardized incidence should decrease by 12.5 percent by 2050, but the elimination threshold for the disease is not expected to be reached.

The results of this analysis were officially published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine.
