Cape Town residents will be able to experience Belgian culture without leaving the city, as the popular festival 'A Taste of Belgium' returns to Newlands for its 15th edition in November. This annual cultural event will take place on Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Belgian Residence in Newlands. Entry to the festival is free, and organizers invite local residents and visitors to spend the day exploring Belgian cuisine, music, crafts, and family entertainment.
The event is organized by the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa (BCCSA) in partnership with the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town. This current anniversary marks an important milestone for the event, which has transformed from a gathering for the Belgian community into a significant cultural event on the Cape Town calendar.
Although Belgian chocolate and beer are well-known favorites, the festival aims to introduce visitors to the broader cultural heritage and traditions of the country. Under the motto 'Belgium. More than you think,' the 2026 edition will highlight the diversity of Belgian culture, giving guests the opportunity to support local Belgian businesses and independent artisans.
One of the main highlights of the program will be the food: traditional Belgian dishes, freshly made waffles, gourmet fries, and wine tastings will be presented. Additionally, visitors can enjoy an open beer garden with a selection of signature brews. The program extends beyond gastronomy and beverages, including live musical performances, interactive cultural exhibits, and family activities. A special Smurf Cosplay performance is also planned.
Stalls from local Belgian businesses, entrepreneurs, and craft sellers will be featured at the event, providing visitors with another way to learn about the contribution of the Belgian community to Cape Town. Reaching the 15th edition is an important moment for the organizers, who note that the event has become more than just an annual celebration of Belgian cuisine and traditions.
The Consul General of Belgium in Cape Town, Nicolas Fierens Gevert, stated that the festival has become a beloved tradition that helps strengthen ties between Belgium, South Africa, and Cape Town. He also emphasized the importance of this event in uniting communities through years of friendship and cultural exchange, starting from the first edition in 2014.
BCCSA Vice President Joe Serekonyane shared his thoughts on the festival's growth: it has evolved from a small gathering where Belgians could socialize outside the home into an established cultural event in Cape Town. Organizers also expressed gratitude to everyone who helped make the previous 14 editions possible.
Visitors planning to attend are reminded of the need for responsible consumption. The 15th edition is organized by the Consulate General of Belgium in Cape Town and the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa. Official sponsors include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, Lotus Biscoff, Duvel, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Nedbank Private Wealth, Reynaers Aluminium, and Tradewinds Parasols.
