Dhanteras is considered a very significant festival in Hinduism. It is celebrated every year on the thirteenth day of the dark month of Kartik. On this day, it is customary to worship the gods Dhanvantari, Lakshmi, and Kubera. Traditionally, it is considered auspicious to purchase new items on Dhanteras, so people buy gold, silver, utensils, brooms, and other necessary household items. Nevertheless, there are certain items whose purchase is discouraged on this day.
According to the Dik Panchang, the thirteenth day of the dark month of Kartik will fall on November 6th, starting around 9:30 AM, and will conclude on November 7th at 11:45 AM. Thus, the Dhanteras festival will be celebrated on Friday, November 6, 2026.
What is recommended to buy on Dhanteras?
Among the auspicious purchases on Dhanteras are gold and silver. It is believed that acquiring jewelry or coins made of gold and silver on this day promotes prosperity and preserves the grace of Goddess Lakshmi. If the budget is limited, one can purchase a small silver coin.
It is also traditionally customary to buy utensils made of copper, brass, and steel. New utensils are considered a symbol of prosperity and abundance in the home. It is important, however, that the utensils are not empty; they should be brought home with rice, wheat, water, or some coins.
Buying a broom on Dhanteras is also considered a good sign, as the broom is associated with Goddess Lakshmi. It is believed that a new broom helps get rid of poverty and attracts abundance and happiness.
Purchasing coriander seeds is considered auspicious. These seeds are used during Diwali festive rituals, and they themselves symbolize wealth and prosperity. Therefore, many people buy whole coriander seeds on this day to include in their worship.
Furthermore, for conducting rituals on Dhanteras, it is recommended to buy Gomati Chakra and idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha. It is believed that regular worship of these items and their placement in the home shrine brings happiness and prosperity into life.
What items should not be bought on Dhanteras?
It is not recommended to purchase iron products, as iron is associated with the god Shani, and its purchase on this day is undesirable. One should also refrain from buying glass items or decorative glass articles. Since glass is fragile and can break from the slightest carelessness, such items are not considered auspicious for such an important day.
Another recommendation is to avoid purchasing black-colored items, whether clothing or other things. In Hinduism, wearing or using this color during religious ceremonies and auspicious events is not encouraged.
It is important not to bring empty utensils home. To ensure well-being in the house, after purchasing new utensils, they should be filled with a small amount of grain, water, or a coin.
Finally, one should not buy sharp objects, such as knives, scissors, and other cutting tools. Since such items are intended for dividing and cutting, bringing them into the home at such a solemn moment is not considered lucky.
