Ikraam Rayners names main weakness of 'Arrows' ahead of Carlin Cup match

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Ikraam Rayners warned the Golden Arrows team that they must not afford to waste chances during the Carlin Cup meeting.

The Brazilian team will face Abafana Bes’thende on Tuesday. Rayners expects a difficult confrontation but is confident that Sundowns possess the necessary experience and quality to handle the challenges.

The Bafana Bafana forward believes that knockout football carries a different level of uncertainty, as teams often approach such matches cautiously, trying to throw opponents off balance. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Sundowns know how to win when under pressure.

Rayners stated: 'Knockout games are always difficult because you don't know what to expect from other teams, but as a team, we know how to win these games, especially when it gets tough.'

The striker also pointed to the importance of early goals as a key factor in overcoming the defense of Arrows, which he believes the opponent is capable of creating. Rayners thinks that Sundowns created enough opportunities in previous games against teams like Arrows, but converting these chances will be critical to avoid unnecessarily complicating the match.

He added: 'We always have many opportunities against them, but we just have to make sure to punish them as early as possible, because once we do that, the game will open up, and we will know we will win.'

On Tuesday, there will also be an interesting match with Mandla Ntsikazi, who recently returned to Golden Arrows as head coach after completing a five-year collaboration with Pirates. Rayners acknowledged the quality of the Arrows coach but insisted that Sundowns should focus on executing their own game plan rather than getting distracted by the opponent's approach.

He noted: 'I think their coach is a good coach, especially when teams play against Sundowns, they know how to set themselves up, but we just need to do our job and work hard to win the game and get the result.'

'Sundowns' enter the cup match after a convincing 4-1 victory over Durban City in the Betway Premiership championship. Since a place in the next round is at stake, Rayners and his teammates aim to maintain this momentum in the upcoming Tuesday meeting and prevent Arrows from settling into the game.

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Marumo Gallants 1-0 in CAF Champions League

Although it is far from complete consolation, Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso was able to breathe a sigh of relief. His team managed to recover from a difficult situation after the defeat on Friday evening, securing a 1-0 victory over modest Marumo Gallants at Loftus Stadium, thereby qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout tournament.

Previously, Sundowns had been eliminated in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after a 1-1 draw against Wiliete SC from Angola on Friday, which ended their dream of defending the continental title they won last season.

This result was a bitter pill for the giants from Tshwane. Winning Africa was their main goal this season, even after having already won the MTN8 and FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup tournaments.

Immediately after the disappointment on Friday, Cardoso urged his team to show character against Gallants in the last sixteen. It initially looked promising when Siyanda Ndlovu scored the first goal in the 20th minute. However, the pace did not meet Sundowns' standards, and a lack of cohesion was observed. This forced Cardoso to make changes during halftime, bringing on Aubrey Modibu and Marcelo Allende instead of Phavaaz Basadien and Thabo Sele.

It is also worth noting the changes in the starting lineup: Ricardo Goss started in goal, and Motobi Mvala served as the team captain.

Sundowns Coach Miguel Cardoso Calls on Team to React After Champions League Exit

Miguel Cardoso, head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, called on his players to demonstrate a reaction to the unexpected exit from the CAF Champions League, which occurred during the match against Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout play-off round at Loftus Versfeld stadium on Tuesday.

The elimination followed a draw with Angolan side Wiliete SC on Friday, thus ending hopes of defending the continental title won last season.

This result was a serious blow for the giants from Tshwane, who made participation in the Champions League their main goal, despite having already won the MTN8 and FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup this season.

Cardoso acknowledged that disappointment would be difficult to overcome, but insisted that his team must shift its focus to the remaining competitions. He stated: 'For the rest of the season, it means we must concentrate even more on the competitions we have yet to play.'

The coach noted upcoming matches: 'We already have a Carling Knockout qualifying match on Tuesday, followed by an important championship match against Durban City on Saturday. And then we will have the Super Cup final, so there are many trophies to fight for; obviously, we will not forget what it means to be eliminated from the Champions League.'

The Portuguese manager recognized the significance of this failure, especially given Sundowns' recent history in the tournament. The club reached the finals three times in a row before winning the title last year, and it was expected that they would qualify for the group stage for the tenth consecutive time.

He added: 'It is hard for the club, and hard for the coaches, as you can imagine. For me, it is hard after being in three finals in a row, and it is hard for the club because it was expected to be the tenth time in the group stage consecutively.' Cardoso concluded that it might be an important lesson to use for further development.

Sundowns retain a chance to win domestic awards and will also face USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup at Loftus Versfeld stadium on November 8. Nevertheless, Cardoso believes that the team's reaction to the loss to Wiliete will determine the course of the remainder of their campaign.

'We won two trophies and are leading the South African league, but this is a major play-off,' he said. 'It is a big slap in the face. What will make us stronger is how we react, because there are so many things to win.'

Cardoso also called for collective self-reflection, acknowledging that the exit requires an honest assessment from all club members. He emphasized: 'As far as I understand, when we win, everyone wins, and when we lose, everyone loses. We need to have a lot of joint reflection, but Sundowns will talk about the greatness that follows this defeat.'

Tuesday's match against Gallants gives Sundowns the first opportunity to respond on the field. After the defense of the continental title is over, the pressure is now on Cardoso and his players to show that they are capable of recovering and turning disappointment into new determination.

However, Siwelele maintained composure in a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 4-3 and securing their spot in the final eight.

Sekhukhune United 3–1 Richards Bay

Sekhukhune United guaranteed their place in the next round through active play in the second half against Richards Bay. After a quiet first 45 minutes, Babina Noko came on and scored three brilliant goals. Although Richards Bay managed to score one back, Sekhukhune confidently maintained a 3-1 lead.

Preview of Tuesday's Matches

Sunday's excitement will continue on Tuesday with three thrilling Round of 16 matches. The main focus will be on the traditional giants: Orlando Pirates will host Milford FC at Orlando Stadium, while Kaizer Chiefs will face the dangerous TS Galaxy side. In Pretoria, defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns will meet Marumo Gallants at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Given that unexpected results are always possible in cup competitions, each of these strong teams will need to be in full fighting shape to join the weekend winners in the quarter-final draw.
