Oil prices rose at the start of Asian trading on Tuesday following reports that the United States had struck Kish Island in Iran. This incident raised concerns about the escalation of the eight-month conflict and prolonged disruptions to oil supplies in the Middle East.
Brent crude futures increased by 48 cents, or 0.5%, reaching $105.25 a barrel at 01:04 GMT. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate crude rose by 47 cents, or 0.5%, to $96.93 a barrel. It is worth noting that on Monday, Brent futures closed at $104.77 a barrel, which was a decrease of $8.66 or 7.63%.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, the United States conducted strikes on Iran's Kish Island. Some of these officials characterized the attacks as defensive measures aimed at preventing Iran from attacking commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tim Waterer, a lead market analyst at KCM Trade, noted that this report added a risk premium to the oil price. He stated: 'As markets began to consider a more diplomatic path, this reminder of ongoing military activity changed the tone.'
Meanwhile, on Monday, Tehran announced that contacts between Iran and the US regarding a cessation of war were continuing. These negotiations between Iran and mediators from Qatar resulted in changes to proposals but no breakthrough.
Donald Trump expressed doubts on Monday about whether he would carry out the threat of resuming military strikes against Iran, adding that a deal with Tehran might be possible.
The conflict between the US and Iran, which began in late February, has significantly reduced traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which previously accounted for about one-fifth of global crude oil and natural gas supplies. The war in Iran is one of the main reasons for high gasoline prices, putting pressure on voters, and Trump is under pressure to end this conflict.
Brent reached its six-month high in October due to fears that the Middle East conflict could flare up again after the US midterm elections on Tuesday. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khomeini granted the government certain powers to conduct peace talks.
Furthermore, the US plans to gather delegations from Ukraine and Russia in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11 to discuss the cessation of the war in Ukraine, post-war security agreements, and de-escalation.
