Karnataka government considers increasing public transport fares after rise in milk prices

Following the increase in prices for milk and yogurt in Karnataka, the government is considering the possibility of raising public transport fares. The state's Minister of Transport, Baiyari Suresh, reported that a meeting was held with representatives of four state transport corporations on Duble Road in Bangalore.

This meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening, and the decision on increasing fares for state buses will be made there. An official notification will be issued after the decision is reached.

Transport Minister Baiyari Suresh cited the rise in diesel fuel prices, noting that the four transport corporations incurred a cumulative loss of 9 thousand crore rupees. He also informed that the transport corporations face annual losses of about 2 thousand crore rupees.

He stated that the necessity of increasing fares and the required magnitude of changes would be discussed at the meeting. A decision on this matter will be made this evening, and information about it will be available the next day.

Furthermore, the minister mentioned the price hike for diesel fuel by the central government. He noted that over the last nine months, the central government has increased diesel fuel prices five times, leading to a loss of 9 thousand crore rupees for the four transport corporations in Karnataka. The annual deficit of the corporations is 2 thousand crore rupees.

Baiyari Suresh emphasized that they are facing serious difficulties as they need to pay employee salaries, purchase diesel fuel, and cover other expenses. Due to this, there may be an increase in bus fares in Karnataka soon.

Expert warns of serious affordable housing crisis in India due to rising prices and government levies

Real estate magnate Niranjan Hirandandani issued a serious warning regarding the housing sector in India. He stated that finding affordable housing in the country has become extremely difficult. He attributed this to the rising cost of land, increased construction expenses, and government levies, which make homes inaccessible to ordinary buyers.

Hirandandani also warned that if immediate policy intervention is not made, this crisis could worsen in the coming years. In one interview, he noted that the industry's inability to provide affordable housing is turning into a serious economic and social problem.

When asked about affordable housing, he asserted that the 'affordable housing' segment has virtually disappeared; he emphasized that there are no homes available for purchase for 50 million rupees or less. He explained that the combination of land costs, construction expenses, development charges, and government payments makes homeownership impossible, calling this segment a source of problems that will ultimately be paid for by the government and the industry.

According to the Economic Review for 2025–26, in 2025, the share of homes priced under 50 million rupees in India's eight largest cities will account for only 17% of the total new supply, compared to 52.4% in 2018. These figures indicate a continuous shift in demand towards more expensive properties.

Hirandandani pointed out that taxes imposed by the government are one of the main reasons for the increase in real estate prices, leaving developers with very few opportunities to lower housing costs. He cited an example from Mumbai where a house priced at 40 thousand rupees per square foot is first taxed at 20 thousand rupees, which goes to the government. He clarified that these charges include stamp duty, labor contributions, and other development-related costs incorporated into the final sale price of the property. He stressed that these are official costs, not unofficial ones, and is prepared to provide relevant documentation.

In Hirandandani's view, reducing these levies will be difficult because governments rely on real estate revenue to fund public infrastructure. He added that lowering these payments is currently unfeasible, as governments consider collecting these funds necessary for implementing projects such as metro systems or road construction, and do not plan to reduce them. A reduction in the stamp duty rate and the assessor's rate is also not expected.

The expert warned that rising land prices, regulatory costs, and inflationary pressure could further complicate home acquisition. He noted that the combination of increasing land costs, higher fees across the board, and inflation—driven by factors like Mr. Trump—will make housing even more expensive. Analyzing the decline in the share of affordable housing in the overall sales volume, he predicts a further deterioration of the situation in the coming years.

The real estate magnate also opposed the trend of placing sole responsibility for this issue on developers. He acknowledged that the initial blame placed on builders was justified but noted that this accusation has limits. Hirandandani insists on the necessity of developing a large-scale policy involving governments, financial institutions, and private developers. He strongly urged the government to find a solution as soon as possible, otherwise, the situation will become a serious problem. He concluded that the country cannot continue on its current trajectory, warning that ignoring the issue of housing affordability could have consequences far beyond the real estate sector.

Madhya Pradesh government to increase salaries for civil servants and pay overdue allowances

Government employees and staff of Madhya Pradesh will receive good news: the government intends to increase their Dearness Allowance (DA) by 2 percent. This increase will affect not only future salaries but also the payment of arrears for the period from January to September.

However, the entire arrears amount for nine months will not be paid in a lump sum. The government plans to distribute this amount in equal parts over three payment periods. Furthermore, the increased Dearness Allowance will be included in the October salary, which will be disbursed in November.

The government plans to raise the Dearness Allowance for employees and officials by 2%. This increase will be effective from January 2026. The Dearness Allowance (DA) is an amount provided to government workers to compensate for the impact of rising inflation, calculated based on their basic salary. An increase in this allowance means an increase in the monthly salary of the workers.

Regarding the arrears for the period from January to September, the government will ensure the payment of these nine months' arrears in three equal monthly installments. Thus, workers will not receive the full amount at once but will receive it in stages over three months. On the other hand, the October salary will include a payment with the increased Dearness Allowance. The October salary will be received in November, allowing workers to start benefiting from the increased allowance in their regular pay.

This decision is not limited to working employees; it also extends to pensioners of Madhya Pradesh. The Dearness Allowance (DR) for pensioners will be increased by 2%. For pensioners, this increase will take effect from July 2026, leading to an increase in the Dearness Allowance they receive in their pensions. Thanks to this government announcement, both workers and pensioners will find relief. Workers will receive the arrears for the period from January to September in three parts, while the increased Dearness Allowance will be added to the October salary.
