Proteas confirm rescheduled Australian tour in South Africa for 2027

Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Monday that South Africa will host Australia for the historic first multi-format home tour in March and April 2027. This calendar change was necessitated by the new schedule of the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy.

The major bilateral series has been moved to the period from March 24 to April 18, 2027, to accommodate the first global tournament in February. The tour includes three T20 International matches, three One-Day International matches, and one historic four-day Test.

T20 Format Matches Begin

The action will commence in the shortest format, under floodlights. The world champions will play matches in Kimberley (March 24), Benoni (March 27), and Portshepstone (March 30).

Subsequently, the focus will shift to the 50-over format, where crucial points for the ICC Women’s Championship are decided as part of the path to the 2029 World Cup.

ODI Series and Historic Test

The ODI series kicks off on Saturday, April 3, at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead stadium in Durban. This match will be the sixth edition of ODI Black Day—a significant event dedicated to raising awareness and combating gender-based violence in South Africa. The series will conclude with games at Boland Park in Paarl on April 7 and Dafabet St George’s Park in Gqeberha on April 10.

The tour will culminate in a historic event—a single-match Advtech Test from April 15 to 18 at Buffalo Park stadium in East London (Gqompo City). This will be the first time this venue hosts a women's international red-ball match, and also the first meeting between the two nations in this format on South African soil.

CSA CEO, Pholetsi Moseki, noted that hosting a team like Australia is always a special occasion, especially since it is happening for the first time. He expressed gratitude to Cricket South Africa and Cricket Australia for their joint work in confirming the new tour dates following the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy schedule.

Moseki emphasized that this is an exciting opportunity for fans across South Africa to support the Proteas, who will face the reigning T20 World Cup champions across seven venues nationwide. The tour culminates in a historic finale in Gqompo City, where the first women's Test between South Africa and Australia on South African territory will take place.

Moseki also highlighted the social significance of the Durban fixture, noting that Australia's participation in the sixth ODI Black Day will help reinforce the message against gender-based violence in the country.

Tickets for all seven matches are now available for purchase through the official CSA portal.

Third Test between Proteas and Australia: Five Key Moments of Day One in Newlands

The first day of the third Test between Proteas and Australia at Newlands proved to be tense and exciting, concluding with Australia dismissing Proteas for 329 runs, leaving the match in a highly uncertain state.

Despite Australian captain Pat Cummins unexpectedly deciding that the team would bat first on the relatively flat Newlands pitch, Proteas took full control during the first half of the day thanks to openers Aiden Markram and Marcus Ackermann.

However, Australia demonstrated its usual resilience, provoking a dramatic confrontation. Spinners Nathan Lyon and Cooper Connolly caused a collapse in the middle order, putting South Africa in a difficult position before Marco Jansen and Ryan Rickelton managed to recover their positions.

Ultimately, the decisive word was spoken by left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, who delivered a destructive spell with the second new ball under fading Cape Town light, ending an exciting day of play.

Five Key Moments of Day One of the Third Test

Pat Cummins surprised many with his pitch selection, opting to start on the flat surface of Newlands, which offered little assistance for his highly valued attacking brand of cricket. The South African openers capitalized on this decision in the first session, reaching 140/0 by lunchtime, marking Proteas's first century in the opening pair in 41 Test matches.

Ackermann and Markram laid a solid foundation, with Ackermann playing fearlessly and freely, reaching a half-century in style and hitting four consecutive boundaries in one over, before falling short of a Test century due to a poor shot when Nathan Lyon removed him from the crease.

Middle Order Collapse Caused Chaos

After South Africa confidently reached 158/0, the team faced a dip in the middle of the match due to some careless batting. Lyon changed the momentum, dismissing Ackermann and bowling Temba Bavuma for zero. Markram and David Bellingham both scored half-centuries before falling to a short ball. Left-arm spinner Cooper Connolly secured his first Test wicket, reducing the hosts' score to 232/6 and giving Australia a chance to participate in the game.

Jansen and Rickelton Conducted a Crucial Rescue Operation

Facing an impending crisis at 232/6, Marco Jansen (52 runs off 66 balls) and Ryan Rickelton (42) launched a counter-attack. Playing aggressively and calmly, the pair formed a vital partnership of 95 runs, pushing South Africa past 300 and regaining control before the second new ball.

When it seemed South Africa was set to bat all day, Mitchell Starc delivered a masterclass, utilizing the second new ball under fading light. The left-arm pacer took four wickets in just 11 deliveries, including dismissing Jansen and tempting Rickelton forward, finishing the spell with figures of 6/72 and dismissing South Africa for 329 runs at the close of the day.
