Richards Bay Port invests 375 million rands in road repairs to reduce truck congestion

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has announced the launch of a project valued at 375 million rand to modernize key roads in Richards Bay Port. The goal of this initiative is to improve cargo movement and reduce congestion caused by the increased flow of heavy vehicles.

The port operator stated in a media release on Monday that this project, scheduled for 18 months and commencing in October 2026, will focus on restoring the Urania, Newark, and Ventura roads. These roads provide access to main terminals and operational sites within the port.

The modernization includes plans for widening the road surface, strengthening the pavement, installing concrete surfacing, as well as improving drainage and stormwater systems. This project also aligns with the Transnet Reinvent for Growth (R4G) strategy.

Heavy traffic drives road infrastructure renewal

The Director of Richards Bay Port, Winnie Mpansa, noted that the increase in heavy vehicles in recent years has led to accelerated wear and tear on these routes, necessitating significant improvements to ensure long-term operational sustainability.

Mpansa emphasized that this investment demonstrates the authority's commitment to maintaining infrastructure that supports trade and economic growth. She added that restoring these vital roads will enhance safety and allow Richards Bay Port to continue meeting the needs of all port users while supporting future growth and investment.

The operator also specified that the project will create approximately 72 jobs during the construction phase, contributing to skills development, local community participation in the economy, and broader socio-economic development in surrounding areas.

This 18-month project, starting in October 2026, is part of TNPA's broader commitment to investing in infrastructure that enhances the competitiveness, efficiency, and sustainability of South African ports.

It was previously reported that TNPA invested in large-scale infrastructure in the South Dunes area of the port as part of plans to transform Richards Bay into a key energy trading hub. This development aimed to improve access to port facilities and enable the port to meet the growing demands of the energy sector.
