Proteas called up Zubair Hamza and Tony de Zorzi to strengthen squad ahead of Bangladesh series

The Proteas team has strengthened its batting lineup ahead of the upcoming test series against Bangladesh by including Tony de Zorzi and Zubair Hamza.

De Zorzi, aged 29, has recovered from a hamstring injury that previously ruled him out of the series against Australia. As for Hamza, he last played a Test match against New Zealand in Hamilton two years ago.

Bater from Lions, aged 31, demonstrated high productivity during the CSA 4-Day Series campaign last season, scoring 343 runs in just four matches at an average of 57.16. He continued this form in the current Pro20 Cup tournament, where his average was 44.03 at a strike rate of 143.01.

Proteas coach Shukri Conrad stated: 'I am pleased to welcome Tony back after his recovery from injury, and the inclusion of Zubair gives us additional depth in the starting lineup.' He added that preparation for the first match will allow them to assess options and determine the best squad for the conditions.

Conrad may also call up Anrich Nortje, as this fast bowler has recovered from a groin injury that caused him to bowl only 3.3 overs in the second match at St George’s Park before being dropped from the remainder of the series.

Fast bowler Lungie Ngidi was not included in the selection list as he continues rehabilitation, and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreyn was released from the fifteen-man squad.

The first Test match will take place at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg from November 15 to 19, with the second at SuperSport Park in Centurion from November 23 to 27.

Conrad noted: 'Traditionally, the pitches at Highveld favour pace and bounce, although we have seen that Wanderers has recently offered some assistance to spinners. Given this, more attention will be paid to our seam bowling options.' He also emphasized: 'We know the threat that Bangladesh poses, and we expect their fast bowlers to be very effective in Highveld conditions.'

The teams last met on South African soil in 2022, when the hosts won the series 2-0.

The squad will gather in Johannesburg on Wednesday, November 11.

Proteas aim for victory in Cape Town, risking the world number one ranking

After two intense matches in which both teams suffered serious blows, South Africa and Australia head to Newlands for the final game of the heavy test cycle, which is tied at 1:1.

Australia delivered the first blow in Durban, followed by Themba Bavuma knocking Proteas off their feet with a powerful counter-attacking shot in Gqeberha.

Although the World Cup is not being played in Cape Town, the stakes remain high. A victory would allow South Africa to achieve a second consecutive home series win against their arch-rival and displace Australia from the world number one ranking.

For the Proteas team, which has repeatedly had to defend its status as Test Champions, this prospect is extremely attractive. Even after dethroning Australia in last year's Test World Cup final at Lord's, skeptics continued to label them 'paper champions.'

Nevertheless, fast bowler Ryan Rickelton is not planning to be distracted from the current task. He noted that after winning the World Cup, Bavuma spoke with the team, emphasizing that the goal is to leave a more long-term impression and confirm it by playing against the best teams in the world.

Rickelton added that Australia has long been the best and most powerful team in the world. He believes that even beating them on home soil is a huge achievement. However, speaking about the bigger picture, he mentioned the upcoming summer home tournament, which, if successful, could lead the team to the World Cup final in London in June.

He concluded that while both teams are in a very equal state, acknowledging that Australia holds a significant advantage in world cricket due to recent and past history. Currently, the team is simply fighting for the next day, hoping to have a good week.

The current 1:1 scoreline is reminiscent of the 2018 series, when the teams arrived in Cape Town after battles in Durban and Gqeberha. Rickelton, who did not participate in that confrontation, understands the importance of this familiar situation.

He stated that they are now in a similar 1:1 position before the final match of the series in Cape Town against a strong team, which adds confidence and significance. The team is set for a good performance, and success this week will give a significant boost to the team, coaching staff, and their methods. They are focused on achieving the current objective and maintaining stability in their approach to the games.

The third and final match is scheduled for Tuesday.

Proteas win match against Australia in Centurion Park, leveling the series

The Protea team delivered an impressive performance against Australia at Centurion Park in Gqeberha, managing to level the series at 1-1 ahead of the final match in Cape Town next week.

The Thami Bavuma led team secured a victory over Australia by one innings and 31 runs.

After a heavy defeat in Durban, South Africa needed more than just an improved game; they required resilience, character, and decisive performances under pressure. Thami Bavuma, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Vian Mulder provided exactly that.

Rabada (4/77) and Harmer put pressure on Australia during the second innings, but the crucial breakthroughs were provided by Mulder in both the first and second sessions.

Mulder (3/64) finally managed to dismiss the tenacious Scott Boland, after this batsman withstood 166 deliveries, scoring 40 runs. Boland's resistance ended when Mulder slipped past his stubborn defense.

Immediately after this, the all-rounder celebrated another success when he dismissed Australian captain Pat Cummins, putting Protea on the verge of victory.

However, it was Rabada who achieved a clean bowling spell against Mitchell Starc, followed by Jansen delivering the decisive blow when the last batsman Josh Hazlewood edged the ball behind Aiden Markram in the second slot.

Bavuma deserves great praise for leading the team, while Jansen's all-round contribution highlighted his growing status as one of the world's best all-rounders in Test matches.

Now Protea heads to Newlands with increased confidence in their attempt to win the series consecutively against the Australians on home soil.
