Indian Railways demonstrated its high level of responsibility by transporting a beating human heart from one location to another with extreme care. This is the third instance where the Vande Bharat express has been used to transport a human heart.
India's railway network has shown that its mission extends beyond simply connecting cities; in critical situations, saving human lives is the highest priority. On November 1, 2026, the Western Railway presented an outstanding example of sensitivity and prompt action.
The patient's heart was safely and in record time transported from Surat to Ahmedabad using the Vande Bharat train. On this day, five doctors from a special team traveled from New Civil Hospital in Surat to retrieve the human heart for transplantation and deliver it to J.N. Mehta Hospital in Ahmedabad, utilizing the Vande Bharat train service on the Surat-Ahmedabad route.
The main challenge in organ transplantation cases is the limited time. After the heart is removed, it must be implanted into another patient's body as quickly as possible, where every second counts.
Understanding the seriousness of the situation, the railway administration and local officials in Surat and Ahmedabad immediately coordinated their actions. A special 'green corridor' was organized at the Surat railway station to allow the medical team to reach the train carriage without any obstacles.
All procedures were simplified, from arrival at Surat station to boarding the train. To ensure safety at the busy station, RPF and GRP provided security and cleared the way for the doctors. They also helped transport the ambulance from the hospital to the railway station without traffic jams. Thanks to this excellent coordination, the five-member medical team was able to board the Vande Bharat train without any inconvenience or delays.
Upon arrival in Ahmedabad, a similar system was arranged, and the heart was delivered to J.N. Mehta Hospital without delay, where the medical team was already prepared for the transplant. Thanks to the coordinated work of the Western Railway staff, security services, and doctors, someone was given a new life. This step by Indian Railways sends a signal that when it comes to protecting and saving the lives of the country's citizens, the railway is always at the forefront.
