Kuwaiti doctors performed 187 free surgeries and examined over 317 residents in Karakalpakstan

As part of a charitable mission by Kuwaiti specialists in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, 187 free surgical operations were conducted, and medical examinations were provided to more than 317 residents of the region.

Thirty-six medics arrived in Uzbekistan, working across seven different specialties, including oncology, cardiology, and gynecology. This mission was organized at the initiative of the Embassy of Uzbekistan with the support of the Al-Amal medical group and the 'Sheikh Abdullah an-Nuri' society. Patient reception took place at four medical institutions in Karakalpakstan, and the Kuwaiti side provided the mission with necessary equipment and consumables.

The total budget for the grant project amounted to 4.2 million US dollars, of which 3.9 million dollars was allocated to cover medical services, and the remaining 300 thousand dollars was used for equipment purchase.

This marked the second phase of this charitable program. The first mission, held in Nukus from April 29 to May 5, 2025, helped 420 patients, during which the medics performed 253 medical procedures and 36 operations.

Discussion of future projects and social rehabilitation

In addition to direct work with patients, the Kuwaiti delegation held meetings with representatives of Uzbekistan to discuss potential joint projects. The director of the 'Sheikh Abdullah an-Nuri' society met with the Deputy Minister of Health Ilhom Umurzakov, and the parties reviewed prospects for obtaining additional grants to improve the healthcare system.

Significant attention was paid to the issue of social rehabilitation for children with disabilities. Representatives presented projects for outpatient rehabilitation centers in Kegeliy district, Kanlykul district, and Turtkul district, as well as the 'Gamhurlik' center, during meetings with the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Karakalpakstan Farhod Ermanov and the head of the regional department of the National Agency for Social Protection Sailaubay Daniyarov.

Representatives of Euro Sky Investment also visited Jondor district to assess opportunities for implementing grant projects aimed at equipping medical institutions with modern equipment. Participants in the negotiations also addressed the topic of registering Uzbek charitable organizations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, expressing hope for further cooperation in the fields of healthcare and social support.

Previously, a complex hip replacement surgery using a robot-assisted artificial intelligence was successfully performed at the Republican Specialized Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics; doctors from various regions of Uzbekistan monitored the process.

New primary healthcare model to be implemented in 100 additional districts in Uzbekistan

It is planned that starting next year, the new primary healthcare model will be extended to another 100 districts of Uzbekistan. Previously, this model was tested in 28 districts, where seven million people were attached to family doctors.

The essence of the new model

This model involves a structural reorganization of the polyclinic system and also gives residents the right to independently choose their family doctor. Furthermore, it ensures the provision of medical care within the package of services guaranteed by the state. Within this system, agreements are also concluded between medical groups and the population, which clearly define mutual rights and obligations.

During the pilot phase, laboratories were established, medical personnel—doctors and nurses—were trained, and a special 'patient route' was developed, regulating the process of receiving medical care. As part of the guaranteed package, 69 different types of medicines are provided free of charge to outpatient patients.

According to state bodies, the implementation of this model has contributed to strengthening citizens' trust in the work of polyclinics. However, specific data regarding the improvement in the quality of medical services and the results of the pilot project have not been officially disclosed.

It is also noted that the president previously put forward an initiative to create a state award for medical workers named after Ibn Sina. This award is intended to encourage care for people's health, as well as the application of advanced scientific treatment methods and developments.

Over 300 people in Uzbekistan underwent HIV testing using free kiosks

More than three hundred citizens in Uzbekistan have used kiosks for self-screening for HIV. This test is available free of charge and does not require the presence of medical personnel. The results of the analysis, based on a saliva sample, become known within 20–40 minutes.

The introduction of such devices was approved by a presidential decree. The goal of this project is to simplify the process of early HIV detection, especially among workers engaged in labor migration.

Locations and Use of Devices

Kiosks are placed in high-traffic areas, including airports, railway stations, and public places. Currently, these devices operate at Islam Karimov International Airport in Tashkent, the Republican Center for AIDS Control building, as well as in the airports of Andijan, Namangan, Surkhandarya, Bukhara, Kashkadarya, Navoi, Khorezm, Samarkand, Fergana, and Karakalpakstan, and at the 'Zaamin' sanatorium in Jizzakh region.

To use the apparatus, one must scan an identity document, receive a test kit, and conduct the test independently. The collected data is automatically transmitted to an electronic system, which ensures the possibility of feedback, consultation on the results, and referral to specialized doctors.

Testing is conducted using saliva, eliminating the need for blood draws or other invasive procedures, and does not require special laboratory equipment.

In case of a positive result, this is not a final HIV diagnosis; laboratory examination at the regional AIDS control center is required for confirmation. If the diagnosis is confirmed, patients are guaranteed free medical observation and treatment.

It is planned that by the end of 2026, similar devices will be installed in all regions of Uzbekistan.

Previously, senators of Uzbekistan gave their consent to a bill that provides for mandatory HIV testing for citizens aged 18 to 60 who have been abroad for more than three months. Additionally, the issue of restricting employment for individuals with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis was discussed.
