Heat and thunderstorms expected in South Africa on Monday amid special elections

Residents of South Africa can expect a combination of warm or very hot weather, along with scattered showers and thunderstorms on Monday, November 2nd, due to the start of special local government elections for 2026.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts that similar conditions expected on Sunday will persist on Monday and Tuesday, with the possibility of isolated or scattered showers and thunderstorms in various parts of the country.

Weather Forecast

Very hot conditions are expected in parts of the Northern Cape, North West, Limpopo, and Lowveld in Mpumalanga. Additionally, a heatwave warning is likely to remain in effect until Monday in parts of the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, and northern Gauteng, where persistently high temperatures are forecast.

This weather forecast coincides with the time when appointed special voters cast their ballots on Monday and Tuesday, ahead of the official election day on Wednesday, November 4th.

SAWS strongly urged voters and election officials to take into account changing weather conditions when planning their activities. The meteorological service advised: "Voters are recommended to plan their travel accordingly, especially in areas where afternoon thunderstorms are expected."

Citizens were also advised to maintain hydration, take precautions against prolonged exposure to heat, carry umbrellas or raincoats where precipitation is expected, and allow extra travel time. Drivers should exercise caution on wet roads, especially where thunderstorms may reduce visibility.

SAWS will continue to monitor atmospheric conditions and will issue warnings and advice regarding severe weather if necessary.

Wednesday Weather Forecast: Heat, Wind, High Fire Risk, and Rainfall in South Africa

South Africa is bracing for a mixed weather pattern on Wednesday, characterized by heat, wind, and rain. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of an extremely high risk of fires in several regions, as well as persistent high temperatures in some parts of Limpopo.

While much of the country can expect favorable and warm or hot conditions, scattered showers and rain are forecast for the Western Cape's southwest. Isolated precipitation is also possible in parts of the Eastern Cape.

What to Expect on Wednesday

SAWS published a regional forecast on Tuesday, detailing the expected weather conditions.

Heatwave Conditions

SAWS issued a heatwave warning stating that high temperatures will persist in some areas of West Bushveld, Limpopo, until October 23. This province is expected to have clear, warm, or hot weather, which will become very hot in some places. Cloudy patches and fog are expected over the south-central areas. In Gauteng, the weather will be clear and warm, although it will be hot in the far north. Mpumalanga is also expected to have clear and warm weather, with hot conditions in some parts of Lowveld. Morning cloudiness and fog are forecast along the eastern escarpment.

Extremely High Fire Risk in Several Regions

SAWS has warned of an extremely high fire risk in the following locations: Central Karoo in the Western Cape, most of the North West, southern parts of the Northern Cape, Mafubhe Municipality in the Free State, some areas in southern Limpopo, and northwestern Mpumalanga. Residents in these areas are strongly advised to remain vigilant due to the increased fire danger.

Rain Expected in the Western Cape

The northeast of the Western Cape is expected to have partly cloudy skies, while the rest will be cloudy and cool or warm. SAWS forecasts scattered showers and rain over the southwestern parts of the province, with isolated precipitation possible in the adjacent inland region and along the southern coast. Winds along the coast will be moderate or fresh, blowing from the northwest, weakening in the southwest. Fresh or strong westerly or southwesterly winds are expected elsewhere.

Windy and Warm Conditions in the Interior

Regarding wind, the Northern Cape will be clear, windy, and cool or warm, with partial cloudiness in the south and west, and cloudiness in the southwest. Clear, windy, and warm or hot weather is forecast for the North West and Free State. The Eastern Cape will be partly cloudy and cool or warm in the western half, and partly cloudy and warm in the eastern half. Isolated showers and rain are possible in the southwestern parts of both regions. Fresh or strong southwesterly winds are expected along the coast.

Hot Weather in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is forecast to have partly cloudy skies with morning fog in the northern inland region. Otherwise, the weather will be clear and warm or hot, becoming very hot in some places in the northeast. Moderate or fresh southerly or southwesterly winds are expected along the coast. SAWS predicts an extreme UVB sunburn index for KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday. A high UVB index is also predicted for Gauteng and a moderate one for the Western Cape. Residents should take precautions when spending time outdoors, especially in KwaZulu-Natal, where the extreme UV index indicates an increased risk of sunburn.
