Sharks achieve historic victory over Munster in URC at Thomond Park stadium

The Sharks demonstrated their resilience in the United Rugby Championship (URC) match, which was played in rainy conditions, securing a deserved 15-3 victory over Munster in Ireland. This win marked the first for the Sharks at Thomond Park stadium.

Despite the poor playing conditions, the visitors proved significantly stronger than the hosts in front of a hostile Irish crowd. Thanks to this hard-fought victory, the team climbed to fourth place in the URC table before the November break.

The Sharks joined Bulls (second place) and Stormers (third place) in the top four leaders, showcasing the strength of South African teams early in the season. The game was characterized by intense struggle, as the rain turned the ball into a slippery object.

The action began in the 15th minute when Sharks substitute Zek Siyaya created the first touchdown through an impressive break and chase of the ball. After an inaccurate kick from Munster, winger Edwil van der Merwe picked up the ball and passed it to Siyaya. The young player, named Man of the Match, went past two defenders, made a pass, and reached the ball. Since Munster could not handle the defense, flyhalf Gianni Lombard collected the ball and put his team ahead.

The visitors' defense also performed throughout the match, forcing opponents to constantly lose possession due to hard tackles, especially close to their own try line. Although Munster repeatedly entered the Sharks' attacking zone, every time it was repelled. Ultimately, they managed to convert a penalty, leading to a 5-3 score at halftime.

Second Half Action

For most of the second half, particularly in the first quarter, the same scenario persisted. Handling errors made the game intermittent after the break. The Sharks gained dominance through the scrum and, despite Ox Nche receiving a yellow card, remained the team controlling the flow of the game.

After an excellent turnover on the out-side line around the 60th minute, lock Emile van Heerden threw the ball to captain Nick Hatton, who charged toward the try line. Number 8 was tackled just short of the try line, after which substitute scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl dived and secured the victory. Lombard converted the ball from the try line, despite loud cheers from the spectators, increasing his team's advantage.

Besides Siyaya, strong performances were shown by starting number 9 Jaden Hendricks, Lombard, Van Heerden, Hatton, and winger Manu Tsituka. This victory concluded an ideal European tour for the Sharks, who achieved three wins out of three matches before the November break. Furthermore, it gave them significant momentum heading into the next block of URC matches, strengthening their position in the top four.

Goals and Scoring Moments

The score was recorded as follows: Munster 3 (3) — Penalty by J.J. Hanrahan; Sharks 15 (5) — Try by Gianni Lombard and Ivan van Zyl, conversion by Lombard; Penalty by Lombard.

Sharks aim to finish tour undefeated in match against Munster

The Sharks team is determined to end their tour on a high note during the match against Munster, which will take place on Saturday. This will be their last game in the United Rugby Championship (URC) before the international break in November.

Until now, the coastal team has remained unbeaten in the tour, securing confident victories over Lyon in France and Cardiff in the match against Wales. The win against the Irish club will strengthen their position before returning home.

However, due to injuries to key players, including captain Andre Esterhuizen and his centre partner Julenzio Julius, the Sharks will desperately strive to maintain their current momentum at Thomond Park stadium in Limerick, where the match starts at 19:30.

Head coach JP Pietersen acknowledged that the upcoming meeting will be a serious test for the team but emphasized their firm intention to finish the tour without a loss. He noted: 'Three long weeks have passed; we played in France, in Cardiff, and now against Munster. We all want to do what we do best, which is to play good rugby and hopefully get a result by the end of the match.'

Pietersen added that Munster might be disappointed, as they could have beaten Leinster away last week, and they also won't want to lose their last home game before the break. The coach stated: 'The message this week is that we just want consistency. The character of the group was tested last weekend against Cardiff (considering injuries), and we showed strong character. Now we just want to build on that and achieve consistency against Munster. The goal is to show play for 80 minutes. That's what we want to show.'

Battle for the ball awaits Sharks

Pietersen warned that Munster's strengths in the breakdown and their physical power in tackles will create significant difficulties for the Sharks' front row trio. This is particularly relevant as the Sharks aim to ensure quick ball movement and build attacking momentum against a team that skillfully slows down possession and provokes turnovers.

Captain Nick Hatton, who took over from Esterhuizen, along with forwards Manu Tsituka and Matt Romao, will be responsible for securing the ball for the Sharks in the breakdown area while disrupting Munster's possession on Saturday.

He noted: 'It is a great challenge for them to test themselves against some of the best. Manu, in particular, was selected for international games, so this is an opportunity for him to showcase himself in the Springboks squad. Matt and Nick are showing outstanding results. They complement each other very well as a front row trio. Each brings something different: one is a ball carrier, another has excellent rugby IQ, and the third provides a strong physical contribution. So it will be an exciting challenge for the front row trio.'

Edinburgh and Sharks teams to participate in the fourth round of the United Rugby Championship in Edinburgh and Cardiff

On Friday evening, the Sharks and Lions teams will begin the fourth round of the United Rugby Championship tournament. The matches will take place in Edinburgh and Cardiff, respectively. Both matches are scheduled for 20:45 South African time.

After three rounds, all four teams have entered the top eight. The Edinburgh team, currently in first place, will host the Lions, who are in seventh place, at their Hive Stadium. The Sharks are in fifth place, and Cardiff is in sixth.

In Edinburgh, the Scottish team will observe the tragic death of Hayron Andrews by holding a minute's silence five minutes after the start of the game at Hive Stadium. In a gesture of sportsmanship, Edinburgh coach Sean Everitt and his staff visited the Lions after the captains' appearance at Hive Stadium on Thursday afternoon to offer their condolences.

Given the recent form of the teams, the Lions will face difficulties. Edinburgh won five of their last six URC matches, while the Lions have not won outside of South Africa since October 2024, when they defeated Zebre in Parma. The Lions' only victory in Scotland was achieved at Hive Stadium in October 2022.

Cardiff returns to its home ground, Arms Park, after a 29-5 defeat to Leinster. The Sharks aim to respond to their 39-22 loss in the coastal derby in Cape Town. Cardiff has not lost at Arms Park since the Scarlets beat them in the seventh round of last season.

Although the Sharks do not have the best away record, they have performed reasonably well in Wales. Their 21-17 loss to Ospreys at Brewery Field in the 15th round of last season interrupted a five-match unbeaten streak in Wales. The Sharks are also the most recent South African team to win at Arms Park, defeating Cardiff 42-22 in January 2025.

Sharks coach J.P. Petersen intends to improve his team's overall performance away from home. He stated: 'In terms of last season's results, we never truly played away, so that is what we want to improve.' He added: 'We need to be more consistent away and not just a team that performs due to the home advantage. That is what we are achieving in the matches against Cardiff and Munster.'

Sharks dedicate Cup of Challenges victory over Lions to former player Hayron Andrews' memory

Sharks coach, JP Pietersen, dedicated his team's dramatic victory in the Cup of Challenges over the Lions with a score of 40:33 to the memory of Hayron Andrews. He noted that the performance demonstrated the character and identity he desires from his players during the tour.

Sharks secured the win at Stade de Gerland on Saturday when winger Latilele Bester scored a touchdown in the 82nd minute. This goal came shortly after Lion midfielder Baptiste Kuyyo's converted touchdown tied the home team's score at 33:33.

Pietersen stated: 'Today is a special day. Not only because of rugby, but also because Hayron passed away yesterday. It is quite emotional. We will definitely dedicate this victory to Hayron.'

Andrews, who suddenly died in France on Friday, spent most of his career with the Sharks, making over 100 matches for the Durban-based team before moving to the Lions after his time at Sale Sharks.

Pietersen was pleased with how his team fought until the final whistle to ensure a winning start to their European tour, which will continue with URC matches against Cardiff and Munster over the next two weeks.

He emphasized: 'Looking at the game, we deserved this victory. We have very special players in our group, and it was a team effort. There was a fight for 80 minutes, and finishing it like this was truly special.'

For Pietersen, this victory meant more than just the result; it was an opportunity for the Sharks to strengthen their bonds during the tour and demonstrate the qualities they should be known for. The coach added: 'We want to build connections during the tour, we want to show character, and we want to demonstrate our identity abroad. And obviously, today showed that there was a fight for 80 minutes. As head coach, this is what you can only wish for the guys: to fight for the badge, to fight for identity, and to fight for every teammate.'
