When the cold season arrives, people often switch off their air conditioning systems (air conditioners) and then turn them on again only in the summer. However, prolonged shutdown leads to the accumulation of dust and dirt inside the unit, and humidity promotes the growth of mold and unpleasant odors, which reduces cooling efficiency in the following summer season.
To ensure that the air conditioner delivers fresh air without issues and to extend its service life upon next startup, it is crucial to perform a small cleaning and consider several necessary points during winter shutdown. Below are simple steps that should be taken.
Firstly, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the air filter: it should be removed and washed carefully, as fine dust particles accumulate on the filter over months of operation. After cleaning and drying, the filter must be reinstalled to prevent odors from developing inside.
Next, the fan and the heat exchanger (coil) in the indoor unit should be cleaned using a dry cloth or brush. If filters or heat exchangers remain dirty, they can absorb moisture, which promotes the development of bacteria and mold.
It is also recommended to run the air conditioner on 'fan mode' or 'auto-clean' for about 15–20 minutes before complete shutdown. This allows all moisture and humidity inside the air conditioner to dry out, thereby preventing problems with mold or fungus.
Furthermore, to protect against voltage fluctuations during the winter period, the main power switch of the air conditioner must be turned off, and the plug must be removed from the socket. It is also advisable to remove the batteries from the remote control and store them separately to avoid damaging the remote due to battery leakage.
If a window or outdoor split system unit is located outdoors, it should be securely covered with a cotton or waterproof cover to protect it from winter precipitation, dew, and dust.
