Iranian Paralympian Swimmer Izadiyar Announces Retirement

Shahineh Izadiyar, Iran's most decorated Paralympic swimmer, has announced his departure from competitive swimming after a brilliant career. During five Asian Paralympic Games, he won 28 medals.

Despite concluding his outstanding journey in the pool, Izadiyar emphasized that his connection to sports has not ended, and he plans to return to the sports field soon as a coach.

In an exclusive interview with Tehran Times, Izadiyar shared memories of his achievements, memorable performances, and key moments that shaped his career.

He recounted that his first participation in the Asian Paralympic Games took place in Guangzhou, China, in 2010. At that time, he was only 17 years old and managed to win two gold, one silver, and three bronze medals, becoming the most decorated athlete in the Iranian delegation. Furthermore, he broke the Asian record in both events where he won gold.

In 2012, Izadiyar participated in the London Paralympics, being the first and only representative of Iran in swimming. This was a historic achievement for the Iranian Paralympic swimmer, who made it to the final of the men's 100-meter breaststroke for the first time.

Izadiyar continued to win medals at the 2014 Asian Paralympic Games in Incheon, South Korea, where he received five silver and one bronze medal. He noted that although he did not manage to win gold in Incheon, thanks to five silvers and one bronze, he once again became the most decorated athlete in the Iranian delegation.

Two years later, Izadiyar participated in the second Rio de Janeiro Paralympics in 2016, once again representing Iran as the country's sole representative in para-swimming. He reached the final of the 100-meter breaststroke, setting an impressive time of 1:09.63, and also recorded 25.32 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle, which is the current record.

The culmination of Izadiyar's career was the 2018 Asian Paralympic Games in Jakarta, where he delivered a sensational performance, winning six gold and one silver medal. He stressed that Jakarta was his third Asian Paralympic Games and an unforgettable experience. With six gold and one silver medal, he became the most decorated among approximately 3700 participants in the Games.

Although Izadiyar missed the Tokyo Paralympics, he returned to the continental arena at the Hangzhou Asian Paralympic Games in 2023, competing at the age of 30. In Hangzhou, he won two silver and three bronze medals, once again securing the position of the most decorated athlete in the Iranian delegation.

Izadiyar also represented Iran at the Paris Paralympics in 2024 alongside swimmer Sina Zeigamindjad, but an injury prevented him from reaching the final. His last competitive appearance was at the Asian Paralympic Games in Nagoya, where he added three silver and one bronze medal to his impressive collection.

Iran participates in the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya with a reduced athlete contingent

The Iranian delegation has begun its participation in the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, marching behind flag bearer Rouhollah Rostami. This time, Iran has sent 166 athletes, which is noticeably fewer than in previous cycles. Despite the smaller contingent, expectations remain high, as Iran's success at these Games has steadily grown since their start in 2010.

Four Cycles of Progress

Iran first participated in Guangzhou 2010 with a team of 156 athletes, winning a total of 80 medals: 27 gold, 24 silver, and 29 bronze. At the Incheon 2014 Games, the team again finished fourth, but the total number of medals increased to 120, including 37 gold and 52 silver.

In Jakarta 2018, Iran managed to reach the podium, securing third place. With a team of 210 people, Iran won 51 gold medals and over 130 medals in total.

The peak was reached at the Hangzhou 2022 Games (held in October 2023). Iran finished second, collecting 131 medals in total: 44 gold, 46 silver, and 41 bronze. This was the first time Iranian Paralympians placed second overall. Later, Iran's final count was slightly adjusted due to doping-related reallocations, down to 129 medals.

What the Numbers Show

The total number of medals increased from 80 in 2010 to approximately 131 in 2022, representing an increase of about 64 percent. The ranking improved from fourth to fourth, then to third, and finally to second place. Although gold medals peaked in 2018, the overall total and ranking reached their maximum in 2022, indicating a deeper and broader base of medal achievements rather than dependence on a few sports.

Some disciplines have maintained stability. Iranian men dominate seated volleyball, winning gold in the first three Asian Para Games and holding four titles by 2022. The women's team regularly reaches the finals, winning silver in 2018 and again in 2022. Powerlifting is also a cornerstone of Iran's success at every Games.

New disciplines also contributed to the growth. Para Taekwondo and Para Kayaking debuted in Hangzhou, and Iranian athletes reached the podium for the first time in both these disciplines.

Prospects in Nagoya

The contingent of 166 athletes in Nagoya is 20 percent smaller than the delegation sent to Hangzhou. A smaller team has less margin for error, so established strengths such as seated volleyball, powerlifting, judo, and athletics will be even more significant. Competition is also very high: China dominates every Games, and the host Japan will strive to improve its own results at the home tournament.

Since the Games have just started, it is too early to judge whether Iran can maintain second place or even surpass it. History demonstrates a program that consistently turns participation into medals, and the coming week will show whether the more compact delegation can continue this trend.
