Kaizer Chiefs football club manager, Bobi Motaung, issued a statement to clarify the division of responsibilities between himself and his younger brother, Kaizer Motaung Jr., the sports director, amid questions regarding changes in the club's management.
Motaung emphasized that he remains an important part of the club's football operations but acknowledged that his brother has taken on a more active role in the technical department as Chiefs continues to modernize its structure.
Speaking on the Marawa Sportsworldwide platform, Motaung explained that despite the similarity of their roles, their daily duties differ. He noted: 'Kaizer is the sports director—a role similar to mine, but it is deeper because he is closer to the coaches.'
Bobi added: 'I focus more on high-level oversight and knowledge transfer. He comes with modern ideology, modern things that I cannot do. Technology plays a big role in football now, and Kaizer is more focused on technical aspects than I am, and he works closer with scouts. I am more of an administrator, a high-level advisor. He deals more with the technical side of the work.'
The Chiefs manager also sought to dispel speculation that the change in duties caused disagreements between the brothers. He stated: 'We do not conflict. We cooperate, we work together. Everything we do, decision-making, we assess and provide constructive criticism together.'
He continued: 'He makes certain decisions that we either support or disagree with. But these are internal operational matters that we handle. But mainly we cooperate, we work together.'
Motaung's comments offer insight into the evolving leadership structure at Naturena, where Kaizer Motaung Jr. is becoming increasingly involved in the technical aspects of the club's operations. The sports director's duties include close interaction with coaches and scouts, while Bobi's focus has shifted towards administration, oversight, and providing his experience.
The conversation also touched upon succession within the club, especially considering that their father, Kaizer Motaung, chairman of Kaizer Chiefs, continues to lead the organization he founded. However, Bobi downplayed suggestions of an immediate succession plan.
He said: 'Not exactly, the succession plan will evolve over time because right now we are all trying to find our place in the brand plan under the chairman.'
He stressed that the club's future will depend on the contribution of the current leadership, not on any single person aiming for the chairmanship. 'If I can say that the succession plan is Bobi wanting to become chairman, no, that is incorrect. The chairman is here. The chairman is still alive.'
Motaung also acknowledged the pressure associated with the club's legacy, which has been one of South Africa's most recognizable football institutions since its founding in 1970. Currently, his message is that the brothers have separate duties but remain aligned in their efforts to move Chiefs forward. The task of the Motaung family leadership will be to ensure that changes in the club's structure lead to sustainable progress on the field.
