CAF Returns to Two-Year Cycle for Africa Cup of Nations After Strategy Review

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fundamentally changed its stance, officially confirming that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be held every two years. This decision was unanimously adopted by the CAF Executive Committee (EXCO), effectively canceling the controversial move from last year that proposed shifting the continent's main tournament to a four-year cycle.

This reversal occurred following discussions led by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe at the recent CAF Strategic Conference in Cabo Verde. At this conference, the continental governing body agreed to review the future of the tournament.

A central point of the review was the realization that the proposed alternative tournament—the biennial Africa Nations League—is not commercially viable in the short term. This new pan-African competition was initially planned to replace AFCON, but official CAF representatives acknowledged that it would take several years before it could generate sufficient revenue to sustain African football and maintain its global competitiveness.

Dr. Motsepe confirmed that the decision was made to protect the financial foundation of the continent's 54 associations, as well as the interests of African players playing for foreign clubs. He stated: 'The CAF Executive Committee's decision to hold the CAF AFCON every two years is based on promoting, protecting, and advancing the interests of African football and the 54 CAF Member Associations, as well as the interests of African players employed in Football Clubs outside of Africa.'

Motsepe also added that they are concerned that it will take several years before the proposed new pan-African tournament, the Africa Nations League, can make a significant financial contribution and contribute to the development of football in Africa and CAF competitions so that they become globally competitive and self-sufficient.

CAF also presented a tournament calendar for the next decade. The next edition is scheduled for 2027 and will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Subsequent tournaments will take place in 2028, 2031, and 2033. The AFCON tournament in 2030 will not take place, which complies with FIFA rules prohibiting continental tournaments from coinciding with the FIFA World Cup.

In conclusion, Motsepe noted that 'the AFCON competition is also aimed at celebrating African football and the rich and diverse culture, customs, and traditions of Africa, as well as uniting people from 54 African countries, the African diaspora, and around the world.' He emphasized that 'the CAF Executive Committee's decision serves the best interests of African football and will make a significant contribution to the development and growth of football in Africa.'

Usina do Frade track in Macaé accepted national downhill rating stage

The northern mountainous region of Macaé hosted the second day of races on the Usina do Frade track, which is an official mountain bike downhill competition. This event is part of the National CBC DH2 Rating, overseen by the Brazilian Cycling Confederation and the Rio de Janeiro State Cycling Federation (FECIERJ).

The competitions allowed leading athletes from the country to test their skills and positioned the municipality as a national center for the speed descent discipline. The track, located in the Frade area, features a technically challenging route with sandy soil and high-speed sections lasting over three minutes.

Champions of the discipline highly praised the structure and technical quality of the track, comparing it to international venues. This positive assessment strengthens the status of Pista da Usina as one of the key sports facilities in the state and country for mountain biking.

Local athletes noted the significance of participating in the official national rating supported by the local public. Athletes from Macaé emphasized that having a professional track in their territory contributes to improving the training process, attracts racers from different regions of the country, and raises the technical level of local practitioners.

The success of this event also highlights the efforts of the municipal government to develop extreme sports and tourism in the Northern Mountain Region, aimed at attracting new national and international events to the city. The program energized the Frade area throughout the weekend, gathering residents, tourists, and speed enthusiasts.

Peugeot RCZ Vision concept unveiled at Paris Motor Show, foreshadowing the brand's electric models

Peugeot presented the conceptual electric coupe RCZ Vision at the Paris Motor Show, showcasing the exterior design and technologies of the company's future vehicles.

This prototype boasts 500 horsepower and is capable of charging the battery from 10% to 80% in just ten minutes. The name refers to the RCZ coupe, which was a competitor to the Audi TT and was produced between 2009 and 2015, and was also sold in Brazil.

The concept also introduces the public to Peugeot's new visual language, named Feline Future. The headlights retain the three 'claw' design, which are now positioned horizontally both front and rear. The body features meticulously crafted side lines and a bubble-shaped glass roof.

The interior emphasizes the Hypersquare steering wheel, which is nearly square and will be installed in the new E-208 model next year. It operates on a steer-by-wire electronic control system, lacking mechanical connection to the wheels. Maneuvering requires less than one turn to change direction, and the steering slows down as speed increases.

The i-Cockpit interface has also been redesigned: the driver can choose the information displayed on the micro LED screens and even disable the central display. According to Peugeot, the rear seat now accommodates adult passengers, unlike the original RCZ.

The RCZ Vision utilizes the STLA One platform from Stellantis, which will appear in the new E-208 in 2027 and supports hybrid engines. In the concept, it is presented in a more advanced version with a 1000-volt electric system and a solid-state battery only 11 cm high, helping to maintain a low roof profile.

The claimed range is 600 km with an energy consumption of 11.5 kWh per 100 km. Production of this coupe has not been confirmed. Nevertheless, its design, platform, electronic control, and semi-autonomous driving system, which allows the driver to take their hands off the wheel in certain situations, will be used in other Stellantis models.

Peugeot is one of four brands within the Stellantis group, alongside Jeep, Ram, and Fiat, which plan to concentrate 70% of investments in this group going forward.
