Hero MotoCorp plans to increase electric motorcycle production capacity to 80,000 units per month by the second quarter of fiscal year 2028

Hero MotoCorp, India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, intends to ramp up the production capacity of its electric two-wheeler, Vida. According to a senior company official, production volume will be increased to 45,000 units by the end of March, and subsequently raised to 80,000 units by the second quarter of fiscal year 2028.

Harshvardhan Chitale, CEO of Hero MotoCorp, noted that supply is the main limiting factor, as dealer stock levels are only about one day's worth. He emphasized that the low inventory level indicates strong demand for the company's products.

Previously, the manufacturer's electric motorcycle production capacity was 15,000 units per month at the end of the 2026 fiscal year, and it has currently reached 30,000 units. Chitale stated that the company has already doubled its capacity and is on track to increase it to 45,000 units in the fourth quarter. Given the demand, the company plans further expansion, which will allow it to achieve a figure exceeding 80,000 units per month by the second quarter of fiscal year 2028.

The electric motorcycle market shows high demand, with scooter segment penetration exceeding 20%. According to FADA, during the Navratri period, electric motorcycle registrations grew by 33%, reaching 75,758 units, while total two-wheeler registration decreased by almost 3% to 8.34 lakh units.

TVS Motor leads the market, followed by Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, and Hero MotoCorp. All four leading OEMs are increasing their capacities to meet growing demand. TVS and Bajaj are ramping up production to 80,000 units per month by March, while Ather is targeting a capacity of around 95,000 units by July-September thanks to a new facility.

Chitale added that the entire industry is currently experiencing a capacity shortage because demand significantly exceeds supply. He noted that the introduction of new capacities and quality products immediately leads to an increase in market share.

Hero MotoCorp's capacity expansion coincides with the company's plans to develop Vida's distribution. Currently, Vida is sold through about 700 retail outlets. Chitale concluded that with nearly 8,500 sales points available, a significant expansion of the retail network is expected, which will contribute to further growth.
