Russia warns Japan about historical distortions in Japanese films

Maria Zakharova, a representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated on Wednesday that Moscow has noted repeated distortions of historical truth in Japanese cinema and is prepared to take appropriate measures if Tokyo continues such activities.

During a regular press briefing, Zakharova cited examples of Japanese films covering the Southern Kuril Islands (known as Northern Territories in Japan), the Russo-Japanese War, and Soviet intelligence agents. She specifically highlighted the 2003 film 'Spy Sorge,' which, according to her, glorifies counterintelligence operations during Japan's militarism.

Zakharova emphasized that Russia advocates for an objective understanding of history, including within the film industry, citing the joint Russian-Chinese production 'Red Silk' as an example. She also announced that a sequel to this film, titled 'Black Silk,' is being developed.

Furthermore, Maria Zakharova expressed concern over Japan's rearmament trends. She referenced the increased military exercises near Russia's borders, the deployment of short- and medium-range missile systems during drills, and Japan's refusal to acknowledge the outcomes of World War II. Moscow is closely monitoring these events, viewing them as a threat to its security interests.
