Currently, various methods for achieving radiant and healthy skin are widely circulated on social media, and Generation Z members strive to follow these trends by trying new serums and cosmetic products. However, not every viral product is suitable for your skin. Attempts to achieve better skin condition can lead to problems such as irritation, rashes, and dryness due to small mistakes.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), habits such as constantly testing new acne treatments, over-cleansing the face, and aggressively rubbing the skin can worsen acne issues. Therefore, it is more important to understand your skin's needs than to buy expensive products.
1. Following Every Viral Trend
It is easy to want to replicate the skincare routine demonstrated by an influencer after seeing their glowing skin on social media. Nevertheless, everyone's skin is unique, and a product that suits one person may not suit another. It is especially dangerous to use various serums, acids, and exfoliants without proper information, as this can cause irritation and dryness.
AAD experts also advise against blindly copying the skincare routines presented on social media.
2. Over-washing the Face
People with oily skin often wash their faces multiple times a day, believing this will reduce sebum and acne. However, excessive cleansing and scrubbing can increase irritation. AAD recommends washing the face twice a day and after sweating using a mild cleanser.
3. Applying Multiple Serums and Active Ingredients Simultaneously
Skincare routines use components such as Vitamin C, retinol, and exfoliating acids. But using all these substances at once or in excess can cause problems for the skin, leading to redness, dryness, irritation, and peeling. AAD emphasizes that the method and frequency of exfoliation depend on skin type and already used products. Therefore, instead of applying many active ingredients simultaneously, one should create a routine that matches the needs of their skin.
4. Constantly Touching or Squeezing Pimples
When a pimple appears on the face, there is an urge to press and squeeze it. However, this action can increase inflammation and raise the risk of spots or scars on the skin. According to AAD, pressing pimples can slow down healing and lead to deep marks. Therefore, frequent touching of the face or squeezing pimples should be avoided. If acne is persistent or painful, one should consult a skincare specialist rather than trying new products independently.
5. Neglecting Sunscreen Use
Many mistakenly believe that sunscreen is only needed in the summer or when going out in the sun. However, the skin can suffer damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays even while being outdoors during the day. Therefore, including sunscreen in the skincare routine is mandatory. AAD advises using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when going outside. It should be applied after other skincare products and before makeup, and reapplied depending on the time spent outdoors.
Achieving good skin does not require a large number of products or a long routine. It is necessary to choose the right cleansing gel, moisturizer, and sunscreen that match your skin type. If any product causes constant irritation, itching, or increased acne, you should stop using it and consult a skincare specialist.
