Locke Ferguson ruled out of T20 series against India due to injury; Matt Fisher included in squad

Following the loss to the Indian team and subsequent injury, New Zealand's difficulties in the five-match T20 series worsened, as the team trailed by 0-3. It was confirmed that fast bowler Locke Ferguson will be unable to participate in the remaining T20 matches due to injury.

The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced this on Thursday, October 29. During the second T20 match, Ferguson sustained pain in his right calf. Examination revealed a minor muscle strain. Ferguson's recovery is expected to take about a week or longer, so his current focus is on being ready for the upcoming ODI series.

Fast bowler Matt Fisher has been included in the Kiwi squad to replace Ferguson for the two remaining T20 matches. The fourth T20 match between India and New Zealand is scheduled for Friday, October 30, at Eden Park in Auckland.

Additionally, fast bowler Matt Henry also sustained an injury during the second T20 match. He damaged the thigh muscle of his right leg and will require one to two weeks to recover. However, Henry was not originally planning to play in the remaining T20 matches due to planned workload management. There is hope that he will be able to feature in the ODI series.

The team coach, Rob Walter, expressed disappointment regarding the injuries to both athletes. He noted that Locke Ferguson was very happy about the opportunity to play in front of the home crowd at Eden Park, but his focus is now on returning for the ODI series.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Kyle Jamieson will remain in Wellington for workload management. He may play for Canterbury in the Ford Trophy tournament on Saturday, October 31, before joining the New Zealand national team on Monday, November 2. The team will closely monitor the condition of its main fast bowlers before the start of the ODI series.

New Zealand's squad includes Mitchell Santner (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Josh Clark, Devon Conway (wicketkeeper), Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Jacari Fallax, Bevan Jackson, Edmil Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Timifert (wicketkeeper), Nathan Smith, and Blair Tickner.

First unofficial test between India A and New Zealand A ends in a draw due to poor lighting

The first unofficial test match between the India A and New Zealand A teams, held in Lincoln, ended in a draw. On the fourth day of the match, during the third session of the second innings of New Zealand A, nine wickets were lost. Indian bowlers demonstrated impressive play, putting the Kiwi team in a difficult position. However, due to insufficient lighting, the umpires suspended the game, and the match concluded in a draw.

New Zealand A started the match after winning the toss and decided to bowl first. In the first innings, India A scored only 113 runs, showing a very weak batting performance. Among the players who managed to stay at the crease were Yash Rathore (44) and Devdutt Padikkal (32). From New Zealand's side, Simon King took the most wickets, claiming 5.

In response, New Zealand A scored 317 runs in the first innings, gaining an advantage of 204 runs. Captain Rhys Marius played most prominently for New Zealand in the attack, scoring 76 runs. Regarding bowling from India, Anshul Kamboj and Akib Nabi each took 3 wickets.

After this, the Indian team showed strong play in its second innings, scoring 516 runs and setting a target of 313 runs against New Zealand A. The second innings of India A was marked by a brilliant performance from Devdutt Padikkal, who scored 199 runs. Additionally, Sai Sudarshan earned 91 runs. A crucial partnership of 215 runs was formed between Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudarshan. Yash Rathore also contributed in his second innings, scoring a half-century of 66 runs, while Washington Sundar added 52 runs.

While chasing the target, New Zealand A continuously lost wickets in the second innings. The team scored 187 runs while losing 9 wickets in 65 overs. To win, the team needed to score another 126 runs, whereas India A only required one wicket in 18 overs. Curtis Hiphi remained unbeaten on the field, scoring 90*, while captain Rhys Marius was dismissed after 2 runs. Among the Indian bowlers, Akib Nabi played a key role, taking 3 wickets, and Devdutt Padikkal took 2 wickets.

Although it seemed that India A would easily win this match, poor visibility led to the game being stopped by the umpires, and the first unofficial test ended in a draw. The second of the three matches is scheduled for October 31st in Christchurch.

India has a chance to take the series against New Zealand by focusing on improving bowling game

Despite the Indian team demonstrating dominance in the T20 series against New Zealand, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match tournament, there is another side to the coin. While the Indian batsmen are playing successfully, their bowlers are struggling to make an impression.

In the upcoming match on Tuesday, India will face the task not only of winning the series but also of addressing shortcomings in their bowling game. This match will start in Wellington at 12:30 Indian time. The team, led by Shreyas Iyer, intends to maintain its momentum towards victories.

However, attention will be focused on the players responsible for bowling in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rested, and during Hardik Pandya's recovery period. Special hope is placed on Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh, who are expected to deliver better performances.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to international cricket after four years away has not yet met expectations. In the first two matches played in Christchurch, he conceded 49 and 50 runs respectively for his four overs. An experienced swing bowler was expected to trouble the New Zealand batsmen with his cunning and precise line and length, but so far he has not managed this.

Nevertheless, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel supported Bhuvneshwar, noting that there is a significant difference between local level training and the pressure of international cricket. Bhuvneshwar had to prepare for his return to the team in a short time, and even small mistakes at the international level can prove costly.

The reserve ground in Wellington will be a new test for Bhuvneshwar. The strong and variable winds blowing there can help the ball swing. Bhuvneshwar has a chance to demonstrate his strength, but India needs not only his experience but also wickets and economical bowling.

Arshdeep Singh's role will also be crucial. This left-arm fast bowler has the ability to direct the ball away from right-handed batsmen and inwards when necessary. Top-order batsmen in New Zealand include Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Daryl Mitchell, who have yet to show their full potential in the series.

In the hosts' batting lineup, Glenn Phillips made a significant contribution, scoring half-centuries in the middle order. Ben Vance also scored runs in the previous match. India aims to prevent New Zealand from posting a large score by taking early wickets.

The hosts may also lack fast bowlers Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry, who were rested as part of workload management. Matt Fisher and Blair Tickner were included instead. This could be a relief for the Indian batsmen, but they will have to play according to the conditions.

Indian batsmen brought the team wins in high-scoring matches in the first two games. However, the cold evenings of New Zealand and the strong winds in Wellington will not make the game easy. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi must focus on their technique and shot selection in these conditions.

Vaibhav's performance in New Zealand conditions will be important experience for his future. The opportunities gained in international cricket at such a young age can help him improve his game.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir's strategy of using Tilak Verma, Naman Dira, and Nitish Kumar Reddy in the middle order proved effective in the first two matches. India tested 13 players in the first two games. Vaibhav Suryavanshi got a chance instead of injured Ishan Kishan, and in the second match, Prince Yadav replaced Mainak Yadav.

India won the five-match T20 series against New Zealand during the 2020 tour with a score of 5-0. In the next tour in 2022-23, the Indian team also won this match, which was not cancelled due to bad weather. Now the team has another opportunity to assert its dominance in New Zealand.

A win on Tuesday will give India an undisputed 3-0 advantage in the five-match series. However, the importance of this match is not limited to just winning the series. Batting has helped the team get through difficulties so far; now the bowlers must also justify the trust. Scoring big is good, but a strong team is one that can restrict the opponent's batsmen.

Captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged the contribution of Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy to India's victory over New Zealand

In the second thrilling T20 match between India and New Zealand, the Indian team secured a convincing four-wicket victory, increasing their advantage in the five-match series to 2-0. This match was held at the Hagley Oval stadium in Christchurch.

New Zealand started the game by scoring 180 runs in 20 overs, losing five wickets. When the Indian team came out, they faced a situation where they were consecutively losing batsmen, and it seemed the match was slipping away from them. However, eventually, the young Indian players managed to save the team.

After the early departure of key players, lower-order batsmen took responsibility and helped the team overcome difficulties. Following this tense victory, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer openly shared his thoughts. Iyer admitted that when there was a series of losses, he felt the match was getting out of control.

However, after that, Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy demonstrated incredible determination and changed the course of the game. Furthermore, he highly praised the small but very effective innings of Naman Dheer. Discussing Naman Dheer's versatility, Iyer mentioned seeing him during the series against West India at home. He noted that Naman is an excellent bowler, and when a player contributes both with the bat and with the ball, it brings a special energy to the team.

Iyer also complimented New Zealand spinners Mitchell Santner and Michael Bresshaw, noting that their play in the middle overs and control of the game made scoring difficult. He added that they played several dot balls at the beginning, which increased the pressure on the pace of the game. Nevertheless, in the end, Nitish and Tilak managed to withstand this pressure and led the team to victory.

Despite India gaining a comfortable 2-0 lead in the series, Iyer emphasized that it was too early to celebrate. He stated that the work was not finished, indicating the Indian team's desire to maintain its momentum in upcoming matches to completely win the series.
