Apple launches Siri with AI in Portuguese on iOS 27.2, adding new features

Apple has introduced the new Siri equipped with artificial intelligence in Portuguese, along with the operating system updates for version 27.2. This assistant has been enhanced to better understand user commands, access private information, and perform tasks across various applications.

Currently available in beta phase, this functionality also enables image analysis, text generation, and answering questions on multiple topics. Accessing these features requires a device compatible with Apple Intelligence technology.

The new assistant has the capability to cross-reference data from messages, emails, and photos to solve complex requests spanning several steps. For instance, if asked what aunt suggested for Saturday's lunch, Siri can locate a message mentioning shrimp bobó, find an old recipe sent by Grandma via email, and subsequently add the ingredients to the shopping list in the Reminders app.

This integration extends to third-party applications. It is possible to use Siri to send messages via WhatsApp, listen to audiobooks on Audible, schedule workout sessions on SmartGym, organize travel itineraries on Tripsy, and take notes in Noted.

An additional feature allows the user to maintain a fluid conversation, asking follow-up questions on the initial topic. If a trail suggestion is received via message, the user can ask Siri about the route's mileage and whether it is suitable for children. The assistant can also identify content displayed on the screen and execute actions based on it, such as entering wedding events, including their respective locations, directly into the calendar.

Interaction methods have been diversified. On the iPhone, Siri can be activated via the side button or the Dynamic Island. On Mac and iPad devices, it is integrated into Spotlight. A dedicated application allows resuming past dialogues, maintaining a history synchronized via iCloud across all the user's devices.

Visual Intelligence expands interactions with images on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro devices. By pointing the camera at a music festival poster, for example, the user can check artist schedules and ask Siri to create the events in the calendar.

Furthermore, the assistant has received writing tools integrated into different parts of the system. It can generate drafts, review content, and apply modifications following user instructions. In the Mail and Messages apps, Siri can adjust the tone and punctuation according to the usual communication style with each recipient.

The new Siri employs artificial intelligence models developed by Apple in partnership with Google and the Gemini models. Data processing occurs locally on the device or through Private Cloud Computing. According to the manufacturer, this method allows tasks to be executed on servers without personal data being stored or made accessible to the company itself or third parties, a practice that can be verified by independent experts.

Siri AI is available in beta version for iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, and visionOS 27.2. Besides Portuguese, there is support for English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. To use it, a device compatible with Apple Intelligence must be properly activated and configured in a supported language.

There are restrictions applicable to minors under 13 years old and to the use of the assistant on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS within the European Union. Certain server-dependent features have daily limits, and Apple plans to make broader access available through payment in the future.

Apple Intelligence approved in China; tests to begin in October

Tim Cook confirmed that Apple Intelligence has received approval for use in China and that a test version will be released as early as October. This information was disclosed by the state-owned Chinese newspaper The Paper following an interview given in Shanghai.

The initial implementation of this system will feature capabilities such as real-time translation, image editing tools, and writing assistance. However, the AI-powered Siri functionality will not be part of this first phase.

According to Reuters, Apple created a proprietary language model adapted for the Chinese market. This development was conducted in collaboration with the Alibaba Group, which provided support for the model's training process. This new strategy represents a shift from the company's previous approach in the country, which relied on third-party models to power its artificial intelligence features.

This move occurs within a specific regulatory context. In July, China's cyberspace regulator notified that Apple's generative artificial intelligence service had been duly registered for use on iPhones within Chinese territory.

During his visit to Shanghai, Cook also met with Wang Wentao, China's Minister of Commerce. According to the ministry itself, both discussed the advancement of artificial intelligence and Apple's business interests in the region.

Although testing is scheduled for October, The Paper did not specify an exact launch date. Furthermore, there is no forecast released regarding when the AI-powered Siri will reach the Chinese market.
