Goldman and BlackRock alumni startup raises $4 million to move loans onto blockchain

A new startup founded by Wall Street veterans aims to transfer American loans in the agriculture, energy, and housing sectors onto public blockchains. The company Birch Hill closed a seed funding round of $4 million, led by Multicoin Capital, to facilitate this transition.

ParaFi Capital, Castle Island Ventures, and Nascent also participated in the seed round. This latest injection of capital increases Birch Hill's total funding to $6.5 million. The startup is led by CEO Bhavin Vaid, who previously worked as an investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs and co-founded the crypto investment firm Halo Capital. Co-founder and COO Connor Flanagan spent over four years at BlackRock working on the Aladdin platform before moving into the digital asset space.

The raised capital will support a team of eight people. This team includes three key employees from the Yearn vault platform: Brad Schlagel, Ian Plosker, and Alex Cornwell. Additionally, Traver Normandi joined from the risk management firm Gauntlet to lead business development.

Birch Hill operates through three separate divisions. The Vaults division acts as the official curator on the Morpho decentralized lending protocol, managing credit risk assessment parameters. The Strategies unit develops blockchain lending products, such as Birch Hill Absolute Value. Meanwhile, the Enterprise division has applied to FINRA for broker-dealer membership to place private loan offerings directly with accredited investors.

In the long term, the company plans to securitize pools of US multi-family residential, agricultural, and energy loans specifically designed for storage on the blockchain within regulatory frameworks. In August, Birch Hill met with the SEC's Crypto Task Force to promote this structure. The startup asserts that traditional fiduciaries, such as banks and insurance companies, will only allocate capital to loans packaged in recognized structures.

Kazakhstan introduces mandatory deposit for queue at the border with Uzbekistan starting November 9

Kazakhstan plans to introduce a mandatory guarantee payment for international freight carriers who book electronic slots in the queue at the border with Uzbekistan. This requirement will come into force on November 9, 2026.

According to the new rules, carriers must pay a guaranteed amount of 20 monthly calculation indicators (MRP) or 86,500 tenge. These requirements apply to three border crossings: Kazygurt, B. Konysbayev, and Atameken.

The State Tax Administration of the Turkestan region of Kazakhstan announced these new conditions. To book a slot, it is necessary to ensure that the required amount is in a special electronic account.

If the vehicle arrives at the border point at the scheduled time, the entire deposited amount is automatically refunded. However, if the carrier fails to appear at the scheduled time twice consecutively within 90 calendar days, the guarantee payment will not be refunded, and the funds will go to the state budget.

According to the administration, this measure is aimed at reducing the number of fictitious bookings, preventing the illegal resale of electronic slots, and stopping the artificial accumulation of transport at the border. The Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan advises local carriers to take these new rules into account when planning international cargo operations, comply with booking conditions, and arrive at checkpoints on time.

Uzbekistan investigates reports of possible database leak containing users' personal information

Reports have surfaced on social media in Tashkent regarding a potential data leak from databases containing personal information of users of several popular Uzbek services. Among the mentioned services are SafeRoad, inDrive, Lada Auto, KiwiTaxi, and Fargo.

Digital technology expert Shukhrat Kurbanov stated that after analyzing the circulating information, he found his personal data among the records. This data includes his personal identification number (PINFL), residential addresses, as well as information about vehicles and their documents.

Initially, Kurbanov assumed that the databases contained mainly general information, such as email addresses. However, his check revealed that they might also contain more confidential data, such as PINFL numbers, home addresses, vehicle details linked to applications, car registration numbers, as well as information from driver's licenses and vehicle registration certificates.

Other posts online claim that the databases might have contained information about purchases, delivery orders, and medications bought at pharmacies several years ago.

Currently, it is not established whether the data is actually linked to the listed services or how many users might have been affected by this situation. Kurbanov expressed hope that the relevant organizations are already aware of what is happening and have begun investigating the source of the leak.

At the time of publication, the reports did not contain official confirmation of the data breach, an assessment of the number of potentially affected users, or comments from the mentioned services.
