Jamia Millia Islamia extends online learning and exams until November 24 due to security concerns

Due to security concerns, Jamia Millia Islamia has extended the period for online classes until November 24. Furthermore, the university has decided to conduct second-semester exams in a remote format. Face-to-face classes are expected to begin only after January 13.

According to the university's updated academic schedule, winter holidays are planned from December 25 to January 12. Following this, the start of second-semester classes is scheduled for January 13. However, depending on the security situation, online lessons may continue even after January 13. The resumption of in-person classes will depend on the assessment of the current situation.

This decision was made against the backdrop of student protests demanding the restoration of student union elections. Elections for the Jamia Millia Islamia Student Union (JMISU) have not been held since 2006. Protesting students insist on the announcement of a precise election date, the establishment of deadlines for approving the student union constitution, and the withdrawal of disciplinary measures taken against movement participants.

Following incidents, including vandalism and stone-throwing on campus late Tuesday evening, Delhi police arrested two students on Wednesday. The arrested individuals were identified as Faizan and Jishan. Faizan is the head of the NSUI unit at the university, and Jishan previously held the position of national head of the NSUI media unit.

The Union Minister of Education, Pralhad Joshi, called the campus incident completely unacceptable on Tuesday. He announced the formation of a seven-member inter-departmental committee to study the students' demands. The committee includes senior deans and professors. Joshi noted that the issue of student union elections has remained open since 2006 and stated that he does not consider those who participated in the night violence to be students, calling it the activity of some hooligans.
