OpenAI plans to acquire Google's artificial intelligence chips in an agreement between rivals

According to a report by The Information, OpenAI has plans to purchase artificial intelligence chips developed by Google. This transaction could strengthen the commercial ties between the two companies, which currently compete in the AI sector but also establish partnerships to meet the growing demand for processing capacity.

The commercial rapprochement between the companies has progressed. Shortly before the story was published, OpenAI announced that it would make its most sophisticated AI models available through Google Cloud. Furthermore, in June 2025, Reuters reported that the company had already begun renting chips supplied by Google.

Processors known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) are designed by Google specifically to accelerate artificial intelligence operations. TPUs have established themselves as a viable alternative to Nvidia chips, which are widely used in both training and running AI models.

This year, Google began direct sales of TPUs to certain clients. Among the organizations using these components is Anthropic, a competitor of OpenAI.

Alphabet, which owns Google, projects recognizing a small portion of the revenue generated from TPU sales contracts by the end of 2026. Most of this revenue is expected to be recorded in 2027, as previously stated by the company's CFO, Anat Ashkenazi.

Other large corporations, such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet, plan to jointly invest up to US$ 600 billion (approximately R$ 3.15 trillion) in artificial intelligence infrastructure during 2026. This level of spending has led investors to question when such investments will begin to generate substantial financial returns.

The market awaits Alphabet's quarterly results, scheduled for Wednesday, looking for indicators of expansion in the cloud computing division.

OpenAI is also developing its own processors. In June, the company announced an AI chip created in collaboration with Broadcom, with an expected implementation by the end of 2026. This project is part of a larger program that includes several generations of chips.

The potential acquisition of Google's processors would serve to diversify OpenAI's hardware options while it advances the development of its own technology. However, as of now, there is no public confirmation regarding the terms or the finalization of this negotiation.
