Experience of staying in the underwater bungalow The Muraka in the Maldives above the Indian Ocean

Imagine waking up to the sight of fish swimming directly above your bed. This experience is possible at The Muraka complex in the Maldives. This underwater residential module, located at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island hotel, allows guests to sleep beneath the waters of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by marine life.

Opened in November 2018, The Muraka derives its name from a divehi word meaning 'coral'. Its submerged main bedroom is located approximately five meters below sea level and is protected by a curved acrylic dome that provides a panoramic view of the ocean. Guests do not need to wear snorkeling gear or go out to the reef; they can observe swimming fish directly from the comfort of their bed.

Night Under the Waves

The sensations change after dark. When natural light fades, marine life becomes harder to spot, but the ocean does not fall silent. Traveler Melissa Locker reported hearing clicking and clapping sounds around the bedroom during her stay. A biologist residing at the facility explained that some noises were caused by parrotfish feeding on algae near the structure.

By morning, the underwater world becomes visible again as sunlight penetrates the water. Fish swim past the dome, demonstrating their daytime activity. This is an unusual way to experience the reef without requiring diving equipment or leaving the bedroom. Nevertheless, the impressions depend on natural lighting and the movement of marine creatures, so it is not a constant underwater spectacle.

Engineering Solutions

The Muraka was designed by Maldivian architect Ahmed Salim in collaboration with Yuji Yamazaki Architecture. It was created to combine an underwater room with a luxurious living space above the water surface. The structure was built in Singapore, then transported to the Maldives and lowered into place. The design required meticulous engineering work to create a safe enclosed space underwater while considering the surrounding marine environment.

The underwater bedroom is only part of the entire residential complex. The total area of the complex is about 550 square meters across two levels and includes three suites with bathrooms, a living room and dining room, a kitchen, an infinity pool, open decks, and a private gym. Access to the lower level is via a spiral staircase or a private elevator. Above the water, the complex offers views of the open ocean, while underwater, the acrylic dome faces the guests toward the reef. It is this contrast that makes the experience unique.

What is the cost?

The Muraka falls into the ultra-luxury category. When it opened in 2018, prices were reported to reach around $50,000 USD per night. Later reports indicated lower estimated rates, however, prices change, and historical data should not be considered current offers. Guests can contact Conrad Maldives Rangali Island directly for information on current rates, availability, and service packages.

Another View of the Ocean

The Muraka represents a remarkable achievement in design, but its appeal goes beyond simply sleeping underwater. It offers the opportunity to observe marine life up close, while in the quiet of the bedroom, rather than on the ocean surface. This proximity also serves as a reminder that the Maldivian coral reefs are living ecosystems under pressure from rising sea temperatures and coral bleaching. Although fish may feed or shelter near underwater structures, this is insufficient to assess their overall environmental impact.

Despite all its luxury, The Muraka offers something simple: the chance to wake up and watch the ocean conduct its daily life. Fish swim by, the light changes, and the reef continues to exist. It is a rare reminder of how much life exists beneath the surface. Travel and rate information may change; it is recommended to check the latest details with the resort before booking.
