Maceió reached 36.8°C, recording one of the highest temperatures in the last 65 years

On Monday (the 26th), one of the highest temperatures in the last 65 years was recorded in Maceió. According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), thermometers reached the mark of 36.8°C. This figure is among the highest registered in the capital of the state of Alagoas since 1961, when the historical observation series began, and is the highest temperature recorded in 2026 so far.

Despite the high temperature, it is impossible to definitively confirm that this is a historical record, as the data from many years in the Inmet historical series contain errors.

Heat in Rural Areas

According to Professor Mateus Lyra from the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences of the Federal University of Alagoas (ICAT/Ufal), the intense heat was caused by the approach of a cold front that has been moving towards Bahia in recent days. The professor explained that the approach of this front contributed to the movement of warm air into the Maceió region, leading to an increase in temperature.

Furthermore, this phenomenon changed the direction and intensity of winds on the coast of Alagoas. Usually, the prevailing winds in the region blow from the southeast, but they began blowing from the northeast. The specialist noted: 'This frontal zone sucks in air near our region, allowing all these conditions to arise—both the movement of warm air increasing the temperature and the channeling of this air increasing the wind.'

The expert also recalled that a similar situation occurred on January 23, 2024, when Maceió recorded about 35.9°C.

Intense heat was also noted in other cities of Alagoas. According to Barbara Alves Batista, manager of Hydrometeorology of the State Secretariat for Environment and Water Resources (Semarh/AL), the temperature reached 42°C in Santana do Ipanema on Monday, and 43°C in Pau de Açúcar.

El Niño's influence maintains mild rains and temperatures in Vale do Paraíba; forecast for November

Residents of Vale do Paraíba and surrounding areas should expect to wait longer for the characteristic spring heat. The excess clouds and high frequency of rainfall have kept temperatures moderate in the area, and the projection for November points to a similar scenario, with moments of warming, but without long sequences of hot days.

Meteorologist Josélia Pegorim, from Climatempo, attributes this climatic pattern to changes in wind circulation caused by El Niño, a climate event that affects weather conditions in Brazil. She had anticipated that October would bring excessive cloudiness and precipitation, which would prevent a significant increase in temperatures.

Why is it raining so much and not getting hotter?

As explained by Josélia, the increase in clouds and rain in Vale do Paraíba began to intensify in September, after several cold fronts passed over the coast of São Paulo. Even after these systems passed, the maritime air circulation continues to bring moisture to eastern São Paulo, which facilitates the formation of large amounts of clouds.

The specialist detailed that when a cold front passes, a maritime air circulation enters that injects a lot of humidity into eastern São Paulo state, generating many clouds even after heavy rain stops. In October, besides the cold fronts, other meteorological systems contributed to regional instability. The constant presence of clouds and rain reduces solar incidence and hinders temperature increases.

Josélia emphasized that although a typical October can be hot, the excess clouds and rain, resulting from El Niño, have prevented temperatures from rising too much.

What will the weather be like in November?

The forecast indicates that November will also feature recurring episodes of rain and cloudiness in Vale do Paraíba, which tends to inhibit temperature rises. Although the month is usually hotter than October, the expectation is that periods of heat will be brief. Josélia warned that there will be some heat peaks, but one should not count on prolonged days of sun and heat.

Although the region may record days with higher temperatures, the probability is that these moments will not last long. She mentioned that it would be difficult to have an entire week with heat around 30 degrees in November. The last week of October should also bring climatic changes, as a new cold front is expected to reach São Paulo on November 1st. After the passage of this system, the trend is for more cloudy days and mild temperatures, although in early November temperatures may rise again, keeping the heat period short.

El Niño is expected to continue influencing the climate

According to Josélia Pegorim, the influence of El Niño on the Brazilian climate should persist throughout spring and summer, potentially extending into part of the following autumn. The meteorologist informed that states such as São Paulo, Paraná, and Mato Grosso do Sul are experiencing days of great instability.

She emphasized that the excess cloudiness and rain seen in October constitutes an atypical scenario for the period, but one that aligns with what was predicted for this October. Thus, the expectation for November is a month marked by the alternation between rain, cloudiness, and warmer days, without a lasting predominance of sun and heat.

Rain returns to Paraná this Wednesday, affecting all regions, with rising temperature forecast

The state of Paraná is expected to receive the return of rains this Wednesday, the 28th, according to information provided by the Paraná Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar). The forecast points to precipitation in all areas of the state, although the expectation is for light to moderate rain, without signs of intense storms or considerable impacts.

Climatempo adds that there will be moments of sun interspersed with clouds, and there is a possibility of isolated rains, concentrated mainly in the North and Northwest regions. In most of Paraná, large volumes of rain are not expected.

Rain returns on Wednesday (28)

According to Simepar, atmospheric instability will affect Paraná again this Wednesday, ensuring rain in all regions, but without projections of severe storms. Climatempo signals that the weather will tend to be mostly stable in certain parts of the state, showing openings of sun and quick, sparse showers, especially in the North and Northwest areas.

Despite the increase in cloud cover, temperatures will continue to rise. In the West and North regions, maximums may reach between 23°C and 26°C. In the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, thermometers are expected to register values between 20°C and 23°C during the hottest periods of the day. The forecasted minimum temperatures vary, generally between 12°C and 18°C, depending on the location.
