A capybara cub (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) was rescued by the Environmental Military Police (PMAmb) after being found by residents in the city of Registro, located in the interior of São Paulo. According to information from the Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics (Semil), the animal had been the victim of an attack perpetrated by a group of dogs. Although it was taken for rehabilitation, the cub did not survive and died.
The rescue took place on the morning of Sunday, the 25th, on Yuki Sakura Street, in the Jardim das Palmeiras neighborhood. The corps was called after residents contacted the authorities. Upon arriving at the scene, the police managed to contain the cub using appropriate equipment to reduce stress and prevent injuries.
After being rescued, the cub was transported to the Wildlife Triage and Rehabilitation Center (Cetras) in Registro, located on Estrada do Bairro Jurumirim. Semil informed that the cub, whose age was estimated at three weeks, was sent to Cetras after being found by a citizen due to the canine attack.
At the time of admission, the animal showed signs of severe prostration, abdominal discomfort, and respiratory difficulties. Semil stated in a note that the team immediately initiated intensive support measures, including administering medication and constant monitoring. However, despite the care provided, the clinical condition worsened, resulting in the death of the cub.
Additionally, the necropsy revealed severe pulmonary edema, which is consistent with acute respiratory failure. Considering the case history and the clinical and pathological findings, the assessment suggests that the death may have been caused by the strong physiological stress related to the attack and the subsequent escape attempt, culminating in progressive respiratory compromise.
