Curitiba Photographer is Finalist for Jabuti Award with Book About Late Afternoon Scenes in the City

A photographer from Curitiba has been selected as one of the five finalists for the Jabuti Award 2026, one of Brazil's most important literary recognitions. André Sanches is competing in the Arts category, under the Non-Fiction axis, with his photobook titled «Expediente», which compiles records of the daily life of the city of Curitiba.

The announcement of the results is scheduled for this Tuesday, the 27th. At the end of 2025, Sanches exhibited the material under the name Expediente at the Curitiba Photography Museum. This exhibition served as the basis for the photobook, which was launched in the same location and is now competing for the award.

André began his photographic journey in 2003, dedicating himself to recording moments after finishing his workday. In 2017, he decided to focus more on the records made during the late afternoon period, a time when he noticed a distinct atmosphere in the streets of downtown Curitiba.

He reported having reflections on routine and work, and by staying longer in the center, he captured photos that conveyed a different feeling to him, an atmosphere he did not perceive during the day.

From that point, he established the habit of always photographing at the same time, starting at 5:30 PM, and remaining in the same area of the city, turning this custom into an integral part of the project.

The images were collected over eight years and resulted in a book containing 59 photographs documenting common situations in the capital of the state of Paraná. The nomination for the Jabuti surprised the photographer, who expressed being very happy with the news and awaiting further developments.
